About the Role
The Traditional Wellness Worker supports individuals and families in community through the revitalization and sharing of Haida cultural knowledge, traditional wellness practices, and land-based healing.
Key Responsibilities
- Promotes the revitalization of traditional wellness and land-based healing, including the important role of Knowledge Keepers and mentorship within the community.
- Works with the Traditional Wellness Coordinator and Land-Based Healing Coordinator to create opportunities for healing through culture.
- Supports the canoe initiative, Healing with the Knowledge of Our Kuuniisii, and contributes to programming based on cultural skills, knowledge, and experience.
- Supports Land-Based Healing initiatives, activities, and programming.
- Applies Haida cultural knowledge, teachings, and protocols when supporting community wellness activities and programming.
- Builds and maintains respectful relationships with Haida Elders, Knowledge Keepers, healers, and community members, following appropriate cultural protocols and Haida Ways of Being.
- Engages with community members to identify wellness needs and support culturally relevant programming.
- Supports culturally grounded programming using decolonizing and Indigenizing approaches.
- Helps create safe and supportive environments that recognize historical trauma and potential triggers.
- Promotes programs and encourages community participation through social media, print materials, word of mouth, and other appropriate outreach methods.
- Identifies gaps in services or programming and collaborates with team members to address them.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Additional Requirements
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector screening.
- Preference will be given to Haida candidates as per Section 41 of the Human Rights Code.
