XaaydaGa Dlaang Society, also known as Skidegate Health Centre, supports the health and well-being of our community through holistic care grounded in Haida culture, values, and ways of knowing. We
honour Haida language, teachings, and traditional knowledge while integrating Western health-care practices to provide culturally grounded and responsive health and wellness services for children, youth,
adults, families, and Elders.
We provide a range of health and wellness services, including primary care, public health, health promotion, traditional healing, and mental wellness supports. Our programs and services support
children, youth, adults, families, and Elders in Skidegate and surrounding communities, while recognizing the strengths, knowledge, and needs of the people we serve.
Position Summary
The Peer Support Worker uses their lived experience of mental health and/or substance use to provide culturally grounded, trauma-informed, and relationship-based support to community members.
Working as part of the Health Centre team, the Peer Support Worker provides outreach, connection, and support in accessing services while bringing lived experience perspectives to programs, community
planning, and the ongoing improvement of health and wellness services.
Key Responsibilities
• Build trusting, respectful, and non-judgmental relationships with individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance-use challenges.
• Provide culturally grounded, one-on-one peer support, outreach, encouragement, and practical assistance.
• Support individuals experiencing distress or crisis and connect them with appropriate clinical, cultural, health, and community resources.
• Assist individuals in navigating health and social service systems, including accompaniment to appointments as appropriate.
• Use lived and living experience purposefully to build connection, reduce stigma, encourage help seeking, and support individual wellness.
• Promote harm-reduction, trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and culturally safe approaches to care.
• Advocate for individuals and help address barriers to accessing appropriate services and supports.
• Collaborate with the Health Centre team and community partners to provide coordinated, holistic support.
• Contribute lived experience perspectives to community engagement, program planning, service development, and evaluation.
• Participate in team meetings, debriefs, supervision, training, and professional development.
• Maintain appropriate documentation, confidentiality, privacy, and professional boundaries.
• Ability to work in alignment with Haida values, including:
• Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
• Experience in peer support, community outreach, mental health, substance use, wellness, or other community-based services.
• Relevant peer support training, certification, or an equivalent combination of training and experience in areas such as mental health, substance use, harm reduction, trauma-informed practice, or crisis intervention.
• Experience working with Indigenous communities and/or culturally grounded community services.
• Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License would be an asset, but not required.
• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector screening. Any findings will be reviewed and assessed on a case-by-case basis in relation to the requirements of the position.
