Purpose:
The Parks Maintenance and Public Works Assistant is a temporary summer position funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program and reports to the Superintendent of Public Works. This role is designed to provide meaningful employment experience while supporting essential municipal operations.
The position assists with the upkeep, safety, and appearance of municipal greenspaces, parks, and campgrounds, while also supporting the Public Works team in maintaining the Village’s roads, water, and sewer systems. This is a hands-on, labour-intensive role with the majority of work performed outdoors at various locations throughout the community.
The successful candidate will gain practical experience in municipal operations, develop workplace skills, and contribute to maintaining a clean, safe, and well-functioning environment for residents and visitors..
Job Duties:
Parks Maintenance:
• General maintenance and cleanup of all municipally managed green spaces, parks, cemetery and campsites including litter removal and regular site inspections
• Cutting, brushing, and pruning vegetation in parks, cemetery, along municipal trails, and around municipal facilities
• Grass cutting and lawn care using push mowers, ride-on mowers, and trimmers
• Emptying garbage bins in parks, campsites, municipally owned boat launch and other public outdoor areas
• Managing and maintaining campsites, including cleaning sites, monitoring activity, ensuring campers have paid required fees, and helping keep facilities welcoming and orderly.
• Assisting with maintenance of playground equipment and to ensure safety and accessibility
• Clearing and maintaining municipally owned trails, removing debris and trimming vegetation to keep pathways safe for public use
• Maintaining Municipally owned Garden beds at various sites
Public Works Assistance:
• Assist the Public works team in repairs and maintenance of the water distribution system as directed
• Assist in performing regular maintenance on the sewer lift stations - cleaning and replacing sewer floats, replacing and maintaining sewer pumps
Assist in road maintenance, including pothole repair and clearing of ditches and culverts and cutting of brush at intersections to maintain visibility
• Assist in maintaining Village buildings and making repairs as required
• Cleaning and organizing shop
Working Conditions:
• Majority of work is outside in sometimes adverse weather conditions.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when operating equipment.
Physical Demands:
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds
Qualifications:
• Valid BC Driver’s License
• Skill in operating the tools and equipment needed to perform the job
• Ability to physically carry out the duties of the position
• Demonstrated ability to work alone and follow policies and regulations safely under minimal supervision
• Demonstrated ability to safely use power tools and equipment such as mowers, chain saws, air compressors, using the appropriate personal safety equipment
