Job Description

Position: Information Technology (IT) Assistant position (2) positions 

Location: Prince Rupert, BC

Department/Team: IT

Hours/Pay: 240 Hour Term/$3600


Position Overview

Hecate Strait Employment Development Society (HSEDS) is a non-profit organization governed by a board of directors with a mandate to provide employment programming and training to enhance opportunities for residents of the North Coast, Haida Gwaii, and Bella Bella.


HSEDS provides resources for jobseekers, newcomers, employers, and new entrepreneurs. Our mission is to serve and build connections for people to reach their employment, training, and settlement goals.

The Information Technology (IT) Assistant position is an entry-level opportunity designed to provide hands-on learning and supervised practical exposure to the IT field. This structured work experience will support participants in developing foundational technical skills, understanding organizational IT systems, and building employability for long-term employment or further education in the technology sector.


Key Responsibilities

Under supervision, the participant will gain experience performing the following duties as needs arise:


Technical Support

  • Assist with basic technical support requests from staff.
  • Provide first-level troubleshooting support for hardware and software issues.
  • Escalate complex technical issues to senior IT support when required.


Hardware and Software Support

  • Support basic hardware setup including desktops, laptops, printers, and peripherals.
  • Assist with software installation, updates, and configuration.
  • Help prepare equipment for new staff onboarding and workstation setup.


IT Inventory and Documentation

  • Maintain and update IT inventory records (hardware, software licenses, equipment tracking).
  • Assist in organizing and maintaining IT documentation and procedural guides.
  • Support tracking of equipment assignments and returns.


Policy and Security Compliance

  • Adhere to organizational IT policies, cybersecurity practices, and data protection procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information in compliance with FOIPPA standards.
  • Support safe handling and storage of digital information and equipment.


Certifications and Skill Development

  • Work toward or maintain CELPIP Technical Support Certification (where applicable).
  • Obtain or maintain FOIPPA Certification.
  • Participate in structured learning and mentorship activities to build foundational IT competencies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support departmental learning objectives.


Qualifications and Skills

  • The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and skills:
  • One-year experience preferrable;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Attention to detail to proofreading;
  • Demonstrated strong computer software skills;
  • Ability to enter and manage data with speed and accuracy;
  • Excellent time management skills;
  • Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated commitment to service excellence and teamwork;
  • A high degree of professionalism and respect for confidentiality;
  • Current satisfactory Criminal Record Check is a condition of employment.
