Job Description

About the Role

The Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) performs duties as outlined by the British Columbia College of Oral Health Professionals (BCCOHP), under the direction of the operating dentist. Working within a team environment, the CDA assists with General Dentistry and Specialty procedures, maintains clinical infection control, and supports the organized flow of procedures and client care. The CDA ensures all client interactions are culturally safe, client-centered, and trauma-informed.


Key Responsibilities

  • Performs Certified Dental Assistant duties within the scope established by BCCOHP, including preparing operatories, instruments, and supplies and providing chairside assistance during general and specialty dental procedures.
  • Performs clinical procedures within the CDA scope of practice, including dental X-rays, topical anesthetic, rubber dam application and removal, preliminary impressions, and recording vital signs as required.
  • Provides culturally safe, client-centered, and trauma-informed care grounded in the four Haida Ways of Being and follows Haida cultural protocols where appropriate.
  • Greets and supports clients respectfully, ensuring they are informed and consent is obtained before procedures.
  • Follows established infection prevention and control procedures, including cleaning, sterilizing, and properly storing dental instruments and maintaining clean and organized clinical areas.
  • Maintains accurate and confidential client records and clinical documentation, including consent forms, completed and planned treatment, and odontograms.
  • Supports daily clinic operations, including opening and closing procedures, inventory and restocking, equipment maintenance, lab tracking, and coordination with front-end staff.
  • Provides clients with oral health education, post-operative instructions, and follow-up support as required.
  • Participates in training and supports oral health education and services through COHI, as appropriate.
  • Maintains client privacy, security, and confidentiality in accordance with Niislaa Naay Healing House Society policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

 

Qualifications

Required

  • Certified Dental Assisting Certificate from a recognized Canadian college or university.
  • Current registration and good standing with the British Columbia College of Oral Health Professionals (BCCOHP).
  • Current CPR-C certification.
  • Strong understanding of cultural safety, cultural humility, and trauma-informed approaches to care.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills with a client-centered approach to care.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Comfortable using computers and digital systems for data entry, documentation, and client records.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector screening.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of Haida cultural principles, values, and protocols and their application in the workplace.
  • Understanding of rural and remote communities, including challenges and barriers related to accessing oral health and healthcare services.
  • Preference will be given to Haida candidates as per Section 41 of the Human Rights Code.
