Job Description

Position: Building Support Worker (1) position

Location: Masset, BC

Department/Team: Admin 

Hours/Pay: 240 Hour Term/$3600


Position Overview

Hecate Strait Employment Development Society (HSEDS) is a non-profit organization governed by a board of directors with a mandate to provide employment programming and training to enhance opportunities for residents of the North Coast, Haida Gwaii, and Bella Bella.


HSEDS provides resources for jobseekers, newcomers, employers, and new entrepreneurs. Our mission is to serve and build connections for people to reach their employment, training, and settlement goals.

The Building Support Worker supports the organization by completing landscaping and general maintenance improvements that enhance the appearance, safety, and functionality of HSEDS facilities and surrounding grounds. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking to build hands-on experience in landscaping and light construction while contributing to a community-focused organization.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general yard clean-up, including raking, sweeping, and debris removal
  • Clean and maintain garden beds
  • Remove small trees (e.g., young alders) and unwanted vegetation
  • Organize and improve the appearance of exterior back areas
  • Haul and properly dispose of yard waste
  • Identify simple, cost-effective ways to enhance curb appeal
  • Light janitorial 
  • Maintain a safe and organized work environment
  • Use tools and materials responsibly and efficiently
  • Communicate project progress to supervisor
  • Interior wall painting and trim
  • Light sanding and mudding, patching imperfections on walls

Qualifications and Skills

  • Basic experience in landscaping, yard maintenance, or painting preferred
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools and light equipment
  • Knowledge of surface preparation and finishing techniques an asset
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in workmanship
  • Ability to work independently and follow direction
  • Physically able to lift, bend, carry materials, and stand for extended periods
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Complete a clear Criminal Record Check
