About the Opportunity
1:1 Support Workers provide assistance, supervision and support to designated individual students- during class, throughout the day, and during independent learning time.
The successful applicant will adopt a team approach, working in a collaborative environment with the Classroom Teacher, Learning Assistant Teacher and other classroom support staff.
This position will support students in developing strategies to achieve academic, behavioural, cultural, and social goals in an inclusive learning environment related to the student's Individual Education Plan.
Select Duties & Responsibilities
- Works with designated students, at the direction of the Classroom Teacher, to facilitate active involvement in classroom activities during class time, and to provide independent learning activities that reinforce teacher instruction.
- Provides 1:1 support to designated students during class, small group and independent learning times, inside and outside the classroom, in the following areas:
- Behaviour management
- Resource preparation
- Curriculum implementation
- Social skills development
- Assists student in addressing Social Emotional Learning and Self-Regulation
- Delivers programming to designated students as identified by their IEP and inclusive education strategies, including individual learning activities, with the goal of promoting increased independence and self-confidence.
- Exercises judgment in modifying student behaviour by re-directing and providing positive reinforcement within pre-established guidelines
- Collaborates with teachers and professionals who work with students to ensure they are achieving their IEP/Behaviour Plan/SMART goals.
- Collaborates with classroom staff under the guidance of the classroom teacher to support other learners at times when less help is needed for the designated student.
- Assist with the organization of the classroom, pertaining to the student’s needs, as directed by the Classroom Teacher and/or Learning Asssistance Teacher when necessary and within a collaborative model of support.
- Accompanies designated students on field trips
- Maintains strict confidentiality and security of our students’ information and records
- Incorporates Haida content and understandings into interactions with students, students’ peers, and school community
- Other duties as required to help support our vision, fulfill our mission and abide to our values
You will Bring
- Grade 12 level education or equivalent experience
- Preference for applicants with an Education Assistant and/or Community Support Certificate, but will consider an equivalent combination of training and experience
- Training and experience in assisting in a classroom environment or in working with children/youth with Complex needs, including applying behaviour management strategies
- Experience in working with First Nations students at the elementary school level
- Knowledge of Haida culture an asset
- Training in Level 1 First Aid or better, or the willingness to obtain certification
