Job Description

Business Unit: Human Resources 

Location: Lax Kw’alaams, British Columbia 

Reporting to: Human Resources Manager or Designate 


The Lax Kw’alaams Human Resources Department has an exciting and immediate opening for a Full-Time Payroll Coordinator. As a key member of the team, this role is responsible for providing support to the Band and all the Departments as may be needed and determined by the position and the Human Resources Manager or Designate. This position requires attention to detail when verifying and posting payroll. Proper communicating and corresponding with management and staff are essential. 


Responsibilities: 

General 

  • Process bi-weekly payroll, ensuring timely and accurate handling of payments, deductions, accruals, benefits, and all other payroll-related matters 
  • Reconcile bi-weekly payroll for accuracy and completeness 
  • Manage compensation packages using payroll software 
  • Collaborate with internal teams within and outside the Human Resources Department to maintain an accurate database of employee information, ensuring that all payroll-related changes are processed accurately and in a timely manner 
  • Ensure the strict confidentiality and privacy of financial records and maintain filing 
  • Create required internal financial & management reports from the payroll system 
  • Initiate timely periodic payments by preparing and administering cheques or making direct deposits through a bank payment system 
  • Administer the Band's benefits programs and benefit payments 
  • Prepare government remittances 
  • Review and ensure the accuracy of the system-created T4s 
  • Cross-trained to assist in other areas within the finance team as needed 
  • Complete required approved training to effectively and efficiently perform your role in this position 
  • Experience in unionized environment (Asset)

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education 

  • Payroll Compliance Professional Certificate, or equivalent education 


Experience 

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in payroll processing 
  • Experience working in an office environment and with office equipment 


Competency 

  • Strong Mathematical Skills – Includes accuracy, analytical thinking, and effective problem-solving 
  • Knowledge of Payworks Payroll System – Familiar with the platform and eager to expand proficiency (strong asset) 
  • High Attention to Detail – Highly organized and precise in data entry and record-keeping 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office – Especially skilled in Excel; capable of identifying discrepancies and analyzing data 
  • Timeliness – Reliable in meeting deadlines and ensuring timely payroll processing 
  • Excellent Communication Skills – Strong written and verbal communication for preparing reports, liaising with staff, and coordinating with third parties 
  • Team-Oriented and Self-Motivated – Able to collaborate effectively or work independently as needed 
  • Confidentiality and Integrity – Maintains discretion, demonstrates strong ethics, and handles sensitive information with professionalism

  • You may have to spend long hours sitting and using office equipment, computers and attending meetings 


Mental Demands 

  • You will have to complete several tasks and responsibilities at one time and must be prepared to deal with emergencies and stressful situations at any time. 


Condition of Employment

  • Follow all guidelines harmoniously and cooperatively, creating a team approach in their duties for the Band’s future success 
  • Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search 
  • Valid Driver’s License is an asset 


Classification/Pay Scale 

  • As per the Canadian Union of Public Employees’ Local 2365 Collective Agreement 
  • $34.88
