Reporting to: Health Director

The Lax Kw’alaams Health Department has an exciting and immediate opening for a Casual Patient Travel Coordinator. As a key member of the team, this role is responsible for coordinating safe and timely travel for First Nations patients who need access to medical services outside the community. This role ensures compliance with health department policies, maintains accurate records, and provides empathetic support to patients and families.

Responsibilities:

General

  • ▪ Schedule and coordinate travel for patients requiring medical services outside the community
  • ▪ Ensure travel arrangements meet patient needs, including special requirements (e.g., mobility aids, escorts)
  • ▪ Liaise with healthcare providers and accommodation services
  • ▪ Process travel claims, reimbursements, and invoices
  • ▪ Maintain accurate records of patient travel, expenses, and approvals
  • ▪ Maintain client confidentiality
  • ▪ Ensure adherence to health department, provincial, and federal policies, including First Nations-specific healthcare regulations
  • ▪ Must be knowledgeable with First Nations Health Authority patient travel policy or prepared to take the necessary course to become knowledgeable, on the job training can be provided
  • ▪ Advocate for community members with First Nations Health Authority for extenuating circumstances
  • ▪ Provide guidance to patients and families regarding travel and healthcare access
  • ▪ Act as a liaison between patients, health professionals, and First Nations Health Authority
  • ▪ Address patient concerns and resolve travel-related issues promptly
  • ▪ File monthly reports with First Nations Health Authority
  • ▪ Recommend improvements to maximize cost-efficiency while maintaining patient care quality
  • ▪ Work closely with health department staff, community health representatives, and external agencies
  • ▪ Support health education initiatives related to patient access and travel programs
  • ▪ Note: Perform all Other duties within the scope of the position and as determined by the Health Director

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • ▪ High school diploma or equivalent;
  • ▪ Post-secondary education in healthcare or related field (asset)

Experience

  • ▪ Experience with data entry (asset)
  • ▪ Experience working in health care or related field (asset)

  • ▪ Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • ▪ Ability to manage competing priorities
  • ▪ Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • ▪ Ability to manage high-stress situations in a calm and professional manner
  • ▪ Ability to maintain accurate documentation

  • ▪ Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and able to quickly learn and adapt to new software systems

Physical Demands and Working Environment:

Physical Demand

  • ▪ Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer, including frequent use of phone and office equipment

Mental Demands

  • ▪ Ability to manage several tasks and responsibilities at one time and must be prepared to deal with emergencies and stressful situations at any time

  • ▪ Follow all guidelines harmoniously and cooperatively, creating a team approach in their duties for the Band’s future success
  • ▪ Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
  • ▪ Valid Driver’s License (Class 5)

Classification/Pay Scale

  • ▪ $29.77/Hour
  • ▪ As per the Canadian Union of Public Employees’ Local 2365 Collective Agreement
