Position : Part-Time North End Literacy Outreach Worker
Job Region : Port Clements to Old Massett
Hours of Work : 3 days a week (7-hour workday. Occasional evening/weekend hours required)
Workplace : Hybrid work option between home and the North End office
Wage : $27,300 - $28,392 per year
Job Purpose
The North End Literacy Outreach Worker will help build and enhance literacy services, programs, and networks between Port Clements and Old Massett. Working closely with the Literacy Haida Gwaii Board of Directors and its Executive Director, the worker will identify activities that will continue to enhance community literacy and coordination in the north end of Haida Gwaii.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Identify and connect with other programs within the community and support community literacy development activities
• Build strong relationships with local community partners to pursue joint program delivery plans
• Recruit and facilitate volunteer tutors and adult learners at the north end
• Work as a tutor to our adult learners
• Be involved in specialized projects and events
• Must have a vehicle and be willing to travel
Qualifications
• Three to five years experience in community development
• Relevant post-secondary education and/or experience related to literacy and community learning
• Knowledge and understanding of literacy and community-based planning processes, and understanding of capacity and strength-building approaches
• Proven ability to work independently and develop partnerships
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to use computers to convey information
effectively
• Knowledge of communities of Masset, Old Massett and Port Clements and established contacts with relevant
stakeholders in the community is highly desired
• Possess a passion for literacy and community capacity building
