Reporting to: Director of Infrastructure
The Lax Kw’alaams Public Works Department has an exciting and immediate opening for a Full-Time Heavy-Duty Mechanic Apprentice. As a key member of the team, this entry level position focuses on gaining hands on technical mechanical skills while ensuring the shop remains safe and efficient.
Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the lead mechanic, the successful candidate will be responsible for:
- * Preventative Maintenance: Cleaning, lubricating, and performing routine services like oil and filter changes to prevent equipment failure.
- * Diagnostic Support: Assisting in identifying mechanical and electrical faults using computerized testing equipment and diagnostic tools.
- * Repairs and Replacements: Adjusting equipment and replacing defective parts or components such as bearings, pistons, and gears.
- * System Overhauls: Helping dismantle and reassemble major components, including engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems.
- * Shop Support: Maintaining inventory for shop supplies, cleaning workspaces, and ensuring all tools are operated safely.
- * Documentation: Keeping accurate logs of equipment conditions, work performed, and parts used for service records.
Qualifications:
Education
Grade 10 minimum, high school diploma preferred. Strong math and English literacy skills.
Experience
A candidate with a strong mechanical aptitude is preferred.
Competency
This position combines a blend of on-the-job training and technical training over 4 years. The successful candidate will attend on campus classes for 28 weeks over 4 yrs. and log 6330 hrs. worth of on-the -job training during the apprenticeship pathway.
Physical Demands and Working Environment:
- * Willingness to Learn: A proactive attitude toward absorbing new technical information and following instructions from mentors.
- * Mechanical Aptitude: Basic familiarity with tools and an interest in how complex machinery operates.
- * Physical Stamina: The ability to lift heavy parts, work in awkward positions, and endure various outdoor weather conditions.
- * Problem-Solving: Critical thinking skills to troubleshoot errors and determine necessary repairs.
- * Safety Consciousness: Strict adherence to occupational health and safety (OH&S) guidelines and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

- * Valid Driver’s License (Class 5)
Classification/Pay Scale
- * You can expect a supportive work environment, a total compensation package which includes a competitive wage, extended health and dental benefits and a pension plan.
- * As per the Canadian Union of Public Employees’ Local 2365 Collective Agreement
- * Starting salary $21.00/hr. Monday – Fri, 8:30am – 4:30pm, 7hrs./day, 35hrs./week
