Job Description

The Lax Kw’alaams Recreation Centre Department has an exciting and immediate opening for a Temporary Full-Time Custodian, until the return of the previous Custodian. As a key member of the team, this role is responsible for providing cleaning and some upkeep of the Recreation Department. This includes, but is not limited to the cleaning and hosing of the pool deck; cleaning the changing rooms, lobby, weight room, gymnasium, washrooms, kitchen and exterior of the Recreation Centre. Further, the successful candidate will be detailed oriented as well as show initiative and take pride in their work. 


Responsibilities: 

General 

  • Maintenance and cleaning duties, as required 
  • Clean, dust, sweep, vacuum, mop, buff, strip, and wax floors as scheduled or required 
  • Operate a variety of caretaking equipment such as vacuum cleaners and auto-scrubbers; safely utilize required equipment such as ladders and other cleaning related power tools 
  • Collecting and disposing of trash and recycling materials; re-stocking supplies in the lobby; wipe tables 
  • Sanitize shelves, windows, desks and all surfaces; wash and wipe down marks on walls; do laundry as needed 
  • Stack coffee cups left in the kitchen; sanitize cooking surfaces (stove, microwave); clean exterior and interior of the fridges 
  • Cleaning and disinfecting washrooms, changing rooms and fixtures; ordering and stocking adequate soap, towels and other supplies 
  • Report any hazards or maintenance issues; be aware and know how to handle any dangerous chemical substances used for cleaning 
  • Making simple repairs to equipment or fixtures, such as changing light bulbs or unclogging drains 
  • Able to deal with people sensitivity, tactful and professionally at all times 
  • Ensuring that the building is completely spotless for when it re-opens 
  • Monitor and ensure that the building premises are locked, secure and safe during unoccupied hours 

Note: Performs other related duties as assigned 


QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent 
  • Post-Secondary Education (Asset) 
  • WHMIS Certificate (Asset, willing to train) 
  • Building Service Work (BSW) Certificate (Asset, willing to train) 


Experience 

  • Previous janitorial, custodial, or housekeeping experience (Asset) 
  • First Aid skills (Asset)

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team 
  • Ability to organize multiple priorities and set and meet goals and deadlines 
  • Ability to observe equipment in operation and identify and report malfunctions 
  • Ability and willingness to learn and adapt to a changing work environment 
  • Ability to remain alert and act quickly in emergencies 
  • Confidence and ability to work under pressure 
  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials, and safety standards 
  • Strong problem-solving skills 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills 
  • Strong work ethic 
  • Strong attention to detail and reliability 


Physical Demands and Working Environment:

Physical Demand 

  • Required standing for long periods of time and climbing ladders of varying heights 
  • Ongoing exposure to dust, chemicals, unsanitary conditions 
  • Physical ability to lift, bend, and perform repetitive cleaning tasks 
  • Must be able to lift or move heavy equipment up to 50lbs 


Mental Demands 

  • You will have to complete several tasks and responsibilities at one time and must be prepared to deal with emergencies and stressful situations at any time 


Classification/Pay Scale 

  • $26.74 
  • As per the Canadian Union of Public Employees’ Local 2365 Collective Agreement
