Volunteer Board Member – Job Description

Position Title: Board Member (Volunteer)

Location: Prince Rupert, Masset, Daajing Giids (North Coast Region, BC)

Time Commitment: Bi-monthly board meetings (luncheon format), participation in AGM, community engagement events, and committee work as applicable.


Organization Overview:

Hecate Strait Employment Development Society (HSEDS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals in achieving success within an evolving economy. With offices in Prince Rupert, Masset, and Daajing Giids, HSEDS delivers employment and labour market programs, immigration and settlement services, and operates a training centre that serves over 7,000 visitors annually. Mission:

To be a catalyst that helps people achieve success in the evolving economy by building strong communities, supporting employment and training initiatives, and fostering collaborative relationships.


Board Member Role & Responsibilities:

As a member of the HSEDS Board of Directors, you will:

  • Governance & Oversight:
  • Contribute to the development and oversight of HSEDS’s strategic goals, financial integrity, and program effectiveness.
  • Ensure legal and ethical integrity and maintain accountability.
  • Approve and monitor the annual budget and organizational policies.
  • Leadership & Advocacy:
  • Act as an ambassador for HSEDS within your community and professional networks.
  • Represent the Society at public events, community functions, and in relationships with local businesses, government, and partners.
  • Support and promote HSEDS’s mission and vision at every opportunity.
  • Engagement & Contribution:
  • Prepare for and actively participate in bi-monthly board meetings and the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
  • Serve on committees or working groups as needed.
  • Offer guidance and expertise in areas such as finance, HR, governance, public relations, education, or community outreach.

 

 

 

 

 

 


Board Member Expectations:

  • Attend and participate in all board meetings and key Society events.
  • Make a personal commitment of time, expertise, and energy to the Society’s mission.
  • Support fundraising or grant efforts as appropriate.
  • Maintain confidentiality about internal HSEDS matters.


Preferred Skills & Experience:

We value a diverse board with varied professional backgrounds and lived experiences. Areas of interest include:

  • Finance, accounting
  • Human resources and management
  • Education, training, and policy development
  • Communications and public relations
  • Fundraising, grant writing, or government relations
  • Non-profit governance and community service
  • Advocacy and outreach

  • Strategic thinker with a commitment to community development.
  • Willingness to be engaged, accountable, and collaborative.
  • Desire to make a meaningful impact on the economic well-being of individuals in the North Coast region.
