Job Title: Stopping the Violence (STV) Counsellor

Level/Salary Range: JJEP Paraprofessional Wage Grid Level 14 – P

$40.03 - $50.59

 

Position Hours: 20 hrs./ week, 0.5FTE Monday – Friday

Job Description:

·      The program provides individual and/or group counseling for adult women who have experienced sexual assault, violence or abuse in intimate relationships or childhood abuse.

  • The program assists women in identifying, understanding, and overcoming issues related to their abuse and in establishing and achieving realistic goals.
  • Manage an individual counselling caseload, working with women dealing with issues of historic and recent violence from a feminist and trauma theory perspective.

·      Conduct closed therapeutic groups and self-skills workshops for women affected by violence trauma.

 

Role and Responsibilities

  1. Counsel by listening to clients to interpret needs and behavior; to define problems and provide individual and group counselling
  2. Functioning as part of a team, manage and provide counselling services 

a.      (Short and mid-range in term) as appropriate to survivors of violence from a feminist trauma-based perspective using techniques such as therapeutic group counseling and self-skill workshops.

3.     Work collaboratively with the Transition House Support Workers when appropriate or independently with the client through intake, crisis intervention, assessment, development of safety plans, goal setting and planning and termination, and follow-up if necessary.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            

  1. Provide specific information and intervention related to the effects of relationship and sexual violence.
  2. Development, provision and follow-up of therapeutic groups and self-skill workshops.
  3. Performs other related duties as required.

 

Community Liaison, Advocacy and Public Education

  1. Consult with, advocate for, and co-ordinate client services with other agencies, professionals, and systems.
  2. Refer as needed to other programs, services, and agencies.
  3. Gather relevant resource materials for clients.
  4. Participate, as requested, in liaison and networking around issues pertaining to counselling for survivors of historic and recent violence.
  5. Respond to requests from community or other professionals for information about violence against women.
  6. Conduct community presentations, as requested, around issues of violence against women.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY AND RECORD KEEPING

  1. Report regularly to the Executive Director with monthly reports to the board.
  2. Utilize agency resources, including peers, supervisors, and clinical consultants effectively regarding therapeutic issues, ethics, and professional accountability.
  3. Maintain current records, statistics, and documentation, and submit to the Ministry as per the Stopping the Violence contract.
  4. Manage programs appointments, wait list, scheduling.
  5. Participate as an effective team member and contribute to agency team building.
  6. Ensure a process for our clients to evaluate your program.
  7. Support and adhere to all relevant legislative and program standards, as well as HGSP agency policy, procedure, philosophy, and ethics.

 

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  1. Maintain a current knowledge of issues related to violence against women in the areas of childhood sexual abuse, sexual assault, and abuse in intimate relationships, counselling methods and relevant legislation.
  2. Continue to develop skills and expertise as it pertains to individual and group counseling for female survivors of violence.
  3. Attend staff meetings and approved continuing education programs.
  4. Provide leadership to team, agency, and community on relevant issues.
  5. Network with other colleagues and professionals in the field (such as Specialized Victim Assistance program, A&D and Mental Health services)

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related human/social service field or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Two (2) years counselling experience with an emphasis on women who have experienced violence.
  • In-depth and up –to-date knowledge of theory/treatment in the field of trauma and feminist counseling.
  • Satisfactory criminal record check.

Preferred Skills

  • Demonstrated excellent counselling skills, including individual and group counselling.
  • Familiarity with STV program standards, relevant legislation, and community resources.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communications: oral, written, public speaking.
  • Basic knowledge in computer usage.
  • Non-profit and/or Women’s Organization experience.
  • Personal qualities and attitudes that welcome respect and appreciate clients, volunteers, staff, donors, and the larger community.
  • Foster team participation and contribute to the goals and activities of the Haida Gwaii Society for Community Peace, as well as the Society’s Programs.
  • Ability to make decisions based on sound judgment.
  • Aware of and willingness to work on personal issues as they arise.
