Position: Refuse Collector

Department: Operations Department

Job Type: Full-time (40 hrs/week)

Work Location: In Person - Prince Rupert, BC

Wage Rate: $35.56 per hour 

Closing Date: November 7, 2025

The City of Prince Rupert is currently recruiting for one (1) full time Refuse Collector to join our team in the Public Works Sector of the Operations Department. A Municipal Refuse Collector, reporting to Operations Management, is responsible for the manual collection and disposal of waste. This role involves actively working on the garbage truck to collect refuse and residential recycling, screening loads, and walking assigned routes for general litter pickup. The position also entails the operation of auxiliary equipment, performing routine maintenance, emptying litter barrels, and maintaining sidewalks and boulevards. Successful candidate will engage in public interaction and fulfill other assigned duties, all while meeting the physical demands of the job and strictly adhering to safe work practices.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING 

Required:

  • Dogwood Diploma or GED;
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence (Driver’s Abstract required);
  • Ability to follow safe work practices and comply with safe work procedures and all departmental policies;
  • Ability to perform labouring tasks in and around vehicle and pedestrian traffic;
  • Ability to deal tactfully, courteously, and accurately with the public and co-workers;
  • Good interpersonal skills and strong communication skills (both oral and written);
  • Ability to keep accurate records to ensure compliance with Bylaws;
  • Ability to work independently and to accomplish tasks and assignments with minimal supervision;
  • Knowledge of WorkSafe BC Rules and Regulations;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment; and
  • Shall be capable of understanding, reporting verbally and by written report in English and accept and comprehend verbal instructions. 

Certifications Required (if not current, within 2 years): 

  • WHMIS Certification;
  • Traffic Control Certification will be required; and,
  • Emergency First Aid Level 1.  

Fitness Requirements:

This role requires significant physical exertion and the ability to work in diverse outdoor environments. You’ll need to be in excellent physical condition to perform demanding tasks for extended periods. Key physical requirements include: 

  • Heavy manual labour for long durations, including lifting, pulling and managing equipment and objects;
  • The ability to handle or move weights up to 100 lbs and lift up to 40 lbs.; and,
  • Performing tasks such as walking long distances and heavy lifting above the waist for extended periods. 

Environmental Exposures: 

This work is primarily outdoors, meaning you’ll be exposed to all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, rain and snow. You will also encounter: 

  • Varying levels of sound and noise;
  • Potentially hazardous equipment, machinery, tools and materials; and,
  • Traffic, pedestrians and other obstacles in busy work areas. 

Safety Requirements: 

For safety reasons, and as directed by WorkSafeBC regulations, employees must be clean-shaven. 

What you’ll do 

  • This role involves actively working on the garbage truck to collect refuse and residential recycling, screening loads, and walking assigned routes for general litter pickup;
  • Operation of auxiliary equipment and performing routine maintenance; and,
  • There are a variety of labouring duties that include, but are not limited to litter collection, maintaining sidewalks and boulevards and other duties as assigned. 

OTHER INFORMATION THAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • If you are not a local applicant, you must be prepared to relocate to Prince Rupert, BC before starting work. The City can assist financially with relocation costs; and
  • You must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Wage Rate: $35.56 per hour
