Permamant Full-time. 35 hours per week (flexible). Reports to the Recreation Director.
Starting Wage: $24.05 per hour
Position Summary:
The Maintenance Custodian will ensure a clean, safe environment by providing routine daily cleaning of the
administration offices and community hall. The Maintenance Custodian also undertakes major annual and
spring cleaning activities and minor repairs throughout the year. The Maintenance Custodian will be
responsible for arranging repairs outside of scope. The Maintenance Custodian is responsible for all janitorial
supply orders. The Maintenance Custodian is required to attend all Occupational Health and Safety meetings
as part of their position.
Reporting Relationship:
The Maintenance Custodian reports directly to the Recreation Coordinator and works closely with the Executive
Assistant and members of the Capital Works Department.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
1. Maintenance and Repairs
o Performs general maintenance and repairs including grounds and vehicle
o Assists staff with installation of shelves, whiteboards, picture hanging, and other minor repairs
o Responsible for connecting with Capital Works staff for major repairs
o Oversees and conducts annual cleaning activities in both the interior and exterior building
o Ensure routine repairs, and broken/damaged items are repaired, filling holes and painting and
other preventative maintenance activities
o Replace burnt out lights
2. Custodian Duties:
o Sweep, wash floors
o Wash windows
o Empty Garbage & manage recycling
o Clean bathrooms daily and fully stock
o Clean staff kitchens and mezzanine area
o Dust, Wash and clean walls as needed
o Changes and Cleans water dispensers
o Maintain grounds, and remove garbage and unsafe materials
3. Administration Duties:
o Request Purchase Orders and submits receipts for approval of maintenance and repairs to
Executive Assistant
o Orders bulk supplies for all Administrative Buildings and maintain inventory
o Report major repairs and maintenance issues to Capital Works
o Ensures building is secure at night, during holidays, and weekends
4. Other Duties:
o Raise and lower the flags as required
o Performs other duties as assigned by the Recreation Coordinator
Qualifications and Skills/Experience:
o Knowledge and understanding of Haida Culture
o Ability to work flexible hours and respond to after hour emergency calls
o Physically capable of carrying out duties of the position which may include the moving of
equipment, supplies, furniture, file boxes, and other items
o Ability to properly operate equipment needed to provide the necessary cleaning and
maintenance
o Demonstrate a sound work ethic
o Ability to maintain public health and safety standards
o Knowledge and experience in providing general repair and maintenance functions
o Understanding of boiler and filter systems is an asset, training can be provided
o Ability to maintain confidentiality
o Grade 12 graduate and/or a minimum of five years related work experience in Janitorial and/or
building construction and maintenance
o Must have a proficient level of communication skills, verbal and written.
o Must possess good organizational and time-management skills.
o Must possess a valid class 5 driver’s license.
o Valid Level One first aid certification with transportation endorsement
o Work Safe Certification, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information system. (WHIMIS)
o Provide a current Drivers Abstract
