Job Description

Literacy Practitioner - Change Makers

Pay: $20.00 / hour

Hours: 30 hours / week

Location: Change Makers' Education Society

A wage subsidy is available for this position.


Description of duties:


Provide community based literacy services in community. Support adult learners with literacy skills in reading, writing, numeracy, communication, information technology, goal setting and planning. Support adult learners with acquiring life-skills. Provide one-on-one and small group support to learners. Develop relationships in community to support learners with referrals and promote programming. Connect learners with volunteer tutors. Work with volunteers to enhance programming and opportunities for learners. Create marketing materials, flyers, and social media posts. Help learners with forms and basic taxes. Collect and manage data. Participate in community literacy initiatives and tables. Help maintain the imagination library database. Conduct intake assessments. Maintain the cleanliness of the premises.


Skills and experience normally required for this position: 


Communication, innovation, self-direction, ambition, leadership, patience, resourcefulness, organization, goal oriented, strong literacy skills, punctual. Connect with learns and be positive and encouraging to inspire success. Experience with simple tax preparation (training will be provided through CRA). Experience with computer software and applications (word, outlook, powerpoint, excel, teams, & social media) Employee must have a clear criminal record & complete a vulnerable sector check

What work experience, training, supervision, etc., will the employee receive during the Wage Subsidy Placement?

Employee will experience daily check-ins and supervision. Employee will have set goals and review their progress towards those goals. Potential training includes: FOIPPA, Community Adult Literacy Benchmark Assessments, Imagination Library tutorials, WHMIS, foodsafe, CRA Community Volunteer Income Tax Training, training for basic software applications as needed
