Niislaa Naay Healing House Society is well funded and in the early stage of operating as an independent Society. Niislaa Naay services the community of Old Massett, as well the neighbouring communities. Niislaa Naay hosts many interactive community programs such as traditional wellness, mental health, community health, midwifery, maternal health, home care, youth services, dentistry, patient travel, and primary care services. Services are provided from three locations: the youth centre, wellness house, and the Niislaa Nay Healing House. Many programs that are offered have a land-based healing approach incorporating the culture and traditions of the Haida people.

Job Description

Location: Old Massett, Haida Gwaii, BC

Hourly Rate Range: $57.17 – $64.28


Niislaa Naay Healing House Society is seeking a motivated Health Director to lead the delivery of culturally relevant and safe health and wellness programs. This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in managing health services, mobilizing community efforts, and promoting traditional Haida culture and values.


About the Role


The Health Director oversees the day-to-day management and coordination of health services, programs, human resources, and financial resources. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Health Director ensures effective, efficient, and culturally aligned health services are delivered to the community. A priority is placed on supporting and training community members in health-related roles while fostering a cooperative and respectful workplace.


Key Responsibilities

Leadership on Health & Wellness Programs and Services

  • Plan, organize, implement, and evaluate culturally relevant health and wellness programs.
  • Promote First Nations concepts of wellness, healthy ways of being, and traditional Haida values.
  • Advocate for community health needs and respond to emergencies, trauma, and crisis situations.


Planning, Policy, and Compliance

  • Lead community health planning efforts and identify health priorities.
  • Develop and implement culturally safe policies, procedures, and community health plans.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation, policies, and reporting requirements.
  • Prepare and monitor budgets, financial reports, and work plans.


Partnerships, Collaboration, and Communication

  • Build relationships with community members, staff, the Board of Directors, and partners.
  • Collaborate with regional health authorities, FNHA, FNHDA, FNHC, and others to improve community health.
  • Ensure effective communication with all stakeholders, including regular updates to the Board.


Management

  • Supervise and manage health staff and contractors, providing coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
  • Foster a collaborative and respectful work environment.
  • Support staff development through training and capacity-building initiatives.

Qualifications


Minimum Requirements

  • A university degree in Human Services, Health Sciences, or a related field (e.g., nursing, healthcare management).

  • Hourly Rate Range: $57.17 – $64.28
  • Experience in First Nations community-based healthcare settings.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and satisfactory Criminal Record Check.


Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Proven experience developing and evaluating culturally relevant health and wellness programs.
  • Knowledge of Haida culture, traditions, and protocols or a willingness to learn.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience managing staff and financial resources.
  • Familiarity with the First Nations health system in BC and tripartite health initiatives.
  • Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and crisis management skills.
  • Proficiency in using spreadsheets, word processing, and other relevant software.
