Position: Firefighter

Department: Prince Rupert Fire Rescue

Closing Date: 13-Sept-2024
Job Type: Permanent Full-time

Salary Range: $ 6,271.00

What you’ll do beyond attending fire and rescue emergency calls…
• Complete daily tasks and assignments under the direction of your shift officers and team 
leaders of your assigned company.
• Ensure that interactions regarding fire department activities or responsibilities are handled 
promptly, efficiently, effectively, and courteously.
• Maintain a respectful work environment by demonstrating positive workplace behaviour.
• Connect with those around you using your superior interpersonal skills and demonstrate 
your ability to work collaboratively in a team setting. 
• Attend required meetings, including daily start-of-shift meetings.
• Participate in fire and rescue training.
• Commit to personal and professional development.
• Perform inspections and maintenance of fire and rescue equipment and other assets as 
assigned.
• Keep up to date with site-specific fire and rescue guidelines and procedures, medical 
protocols, rescue plans, and pre-incident plans.
• Demonstrate your abilities working with computers and computer software such as FDM or 
Microsoft Office. 

We would be interested in your application if you have the following…
Must haves (minimum requirements):
• Eligible to work in Canada (refer to eligibility statement in Other Information below).
• Grade 12 completion or equivalent (i.e. GED).
• Minimum two (2) years of relevant work experience.
• NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & II Certification (IFSAC, Pro Board).
• Valid First Responder/Emergency Medical Responder (FR/EMR) license or higher level of BC 
Provincial EMA licensing or equivalent.
• Class 5 Drivers License (or equivalent) w Air brake endorsement.
• Safe and responsible driving record as demonstrated on your current 3-year minimum 
driver’s abstract (obtained by you through ICBC or applicable motor vehicle issuing 
agency)
• Both physically and medically fit for the position of Firefighter.
Preferred Requirements & Qualifications…
• Experience working in the following fields: emergency services, structural firefighting, 
forest fire service, police, coast guard, EMS, military, healthcare, or search and rescue.
• Firefighter work experience program.
• NFPA 1021 fire officer 1, NFPA 1041 fire service instructor 1, and completion of other related 
NFPA courses.
• Class 1, 3, or 4 BC Driver’s License.
• Post-secondary education or trades certification.
• Demonstration of service to the community through volunteer experience.

Shortlisted Candidates will…
• Complete a psychological suitability and resiliency assessment.
• Complete an online proctored written firefighter aptitude exam. Those who achieve a 
passing grade of at least 70% will be invited to in-person testing.
• Participate in testing conducted in Prince Rupert over several days, which will include;
1. Physical fitness evaluation
2. Practical fire skills evaluation (follows NFPA 1001 standards)
• Provide proof of all education and certification requirements, including a current clear 
criminal record search (vulnerable sector check included), and a clean driver abstract.

• Be responsible for all travel costs during the recruitment and testing process.
• This position is a permanent position, and applicants must be able to demonstrate they 
meet the City of Prince Rupert’s eligibility requirements as outlined on our website:

• If you are not a local applicant, you must be prepared to relocate to Prince Rupert, BC,
before starting work. As per the IAFF 559 Collective Agreement, Relocation Reimbursement 
funding is available to assist you in your move.
Compensation 
Wage Rate: $ 6,271.00 per month – first 6 months, then indexed according to Schedule A.
