Job Description

Electronic Equipment and Field Technician -Dockside Observer

Fisheries Monitoring Services

Prince Rupert, BC

 

Do you want to help look after our ocean resources? Like to climb trees and dream of climbing the mast of a ship? Archipelago is seeking tech savvy, honest and reliable workers to assist with the delivery of its dockside validation and electronic monitoring programs in Prince Rupert, BC. Hours of work can be irregular with weekend and evening work required. All necessary training will be provided.

 

What kind of work can you expect?

You will be trained to work in the field to:

•      Monitor and document the offload activities of groundfish commercial fishing vessels.

•      Install, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of EM equipment such as cameras, control systems, GPS receivers, hydraulic pressure sensors and rotation sensors on board commercial fishing vessels.

•      Perform biological sampling and recoding of selected species.

•      Assist at offloads with piece counting and halibut tagging.

•      Produce and assemble basic parts and equipment.

•      Maintain a working knowledge of Archipelago’s EM equipment and practices.

•      Assist in maintenance and management of EM inventory.

•      Work with skippers and vessel crew on a regular basis to help them understand and maintain their EM systems.

What do you offer?

·       Self-motivated to learn and grow, and with an ability to prioritize and organize your workload in an effective manner, while working within broad guidelines without direction.

·       Computer savvy, comfortable navigating applications on phone, tablet, and computer.

·       Interest in learning to work on electronic monitoring equipment systems and a mechanical aptitude with some experience with hand tools and a basic understanding of electrical circuits.

·       Ability to work flexible schedules including irregular hours, evenings and weekends.

·       Ability to work independently, follow procedures, and meet strict timelines.

·       Valid BC Driver’s License (or equivalent to) and a reliable vehicle to get yourself to work.

·       The job is physically demanding and candidates should be capable of lifting heavy equipment (<50 pounds) and climb ladders up to 25 feet on fishing vessels.

·       Bonus points: knowledge of the fishing industry and commercially important species.

·       Bonus points: soldering skills.

·       Bonus points: some post-secondary education in a related field, or relevant work experience.

 

What else?

·       Starting wage is $20.81/hour base wage, plus an additional 8.2% paid out on each pay cheque in leu of paid holidays (totaling $22.52/hour). Minimum 4-hour callout on all days worked.

·       Must obtain Fisheries Observer Certification through Fisheries and Oceans, Canada*. This required certification training is provided to successful candidates in our 2-week paid training course.

·       The successful candidate will need to provide a criminal record check (reimbursed) to be certified as a Fisheries Observer as required by Fisheries and Oceans, Canada.

·       Position is subject to an overtime averaging agreement, approved by Labour Canada.

·       At Archipelago, the health and safety of our staff, clients and communities are a priority. We follow Public Health orders and use caution when it comes to safety matters.

·       The hours and work schedule are variable as they are governed by the landing times of the fishing vessels.

·       The work is primarily in prince Rupert, but the ability to travel to other fish landing ports is desirable.
