Job Description

Camp Supervisor

Start Date: May 15, 2025

Term: Fixed-term seasonal contract, 3.5 months per year (May 15 to August 31,2025),

for 2 consecutive years, with the possibility of extension to mid-September each year.

Compensation:

○ In Camp: $325 per day

○ In Town: $32.50 per hour

Location:

○ Primary Camp: T’aalan Stl’ang (Lepas Bay)

○ Administrative Work: Old Massett

The Rediscovery T’aalan Stl’ang Haida Gwaii Society is seeking a dynamic and responsible

individual to join our team as a Camp Supervisor. In this role, you will lead and manage the

day-to-day operations of our Rediscovery Program in a camp setting, focusing on the health and

safety of all participants, staff, and volunteers. Collaborating closely with Elders and Knowledge

Keepers, you will help provide participants with a meaningful and enriching experience in this

extraordinary place. This position requires a deep commitment to the mission and core values of

Rediscovery. As a Camp Supervisor, you will serve as a role model, demonstrating positive

behaviors and fostering a supportive environment for the community, guests, and staff.


Key Responsibilities

➢ Lead and inspire staff in delivering the Rediscovery Program with excellence.

➢ Oversee the program schedule to ensure smooth and effective operations.

➢ Ensure adherence to all safety standards by staff, participants, volunteers, and resource

persons.

➢ Conduct daily safety check-ins from camp with the Executive Director at a set time.

➢ Enforce compliance with the Rediscovery Program Policy and Emergency Procedures

Protocol.

➢ Coordinate staff training and preparation for camp operations.

➢ Delegate duties and responsibilities to staff, volunteers, and resource persons for

optimal task distribution.

➢ Prepare detailed Camp Staff and Session Reports for each camp session.

➢ Demonstrate problem-solving skills and strong written and oral communication.

➢ Practice sound judgment in interactions with staff and participants while maintaining

confidentiality.

➢ Promote a positive environment and foster teamwork within camp operations.

➢ Achieve results through self-motivation and collaboration.

➢ Perform other duties as required.


Qualifications

➢ Relevant post-secondary education and experience in wilderness camp operations.

➢ Extensive knowledge of outdoor activities such as camping, backpacking, multi-day

hiking, and group sports.

➢ Comprehensive understanding of the natural history and anthropology of Haida Gwaii,

particularly T’aalan Stl’ang.

➢ In-depth knowledge of Haida culture, including songs, dances, and traditions.

➢ Xaad Kil (Northern Haida Language) fluency is an asset, with encouragement for

ongoing language study.

➢ Strong personal practices and understanding of organizational development and

program policies.

➢ Demonstrated ability to handle conflict, manage a team effectively, and cope with stress.


Conditions of Employment

➢ Cleared Police Information Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Check.

➢ Current Wilderness First Responder (80-hour) or First Aid (40-hour) + CPR C

certification, or willingness to obtain before camp commencement.

➢ Current Bronze Medallion Lifesaving certification, or willingness to obtain before camp

commencement.

➢ Medically cleared to perform physical responsibilities (e.g., ability to lift 50 lbs).

➢ Class 5 Driver's Licence.

➢ Willingness to work in the isolated setting of T’aalan Stl’ang (formerly Lepas Bay) for

periods up to 31 days at a time.

➢ 1+ years of experience working with youth, preferably in a camp setting.

➢ Strong communication skills and a positive attitude.

➢ Valid Food Safe certification (an asset).
