After School Program Leader Description

Haida Gwaii Recreation - After School Sports and Arts Initiative Program (ASSAI)

Wage & Hours: $25-$28 per hour for 4-12 hours per week  until the end of June, 2025. Pay is dependent on experience education. Shifts are 1:30-5:30 (days are TBD)

Location & Number of Positions Available: Daaxiigan Sḵ'adaa Née School in Masset (2) & Port Clements Elementary (2).

About Haida Gwaii Recreation & ASSAI:

Funded by the Province of BC through the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture, ASSAI supports School District #50 and Haida Gwaii Recreation to offer safe, accessible, high-quality, and fun programming that meets the needs of their school communities. We develop and deliver after school programming in sport and arts for students in kindergarten to Grade 7 who face barriers to participation due to financial, geographical, cultural, family circumstances, behavioral and other factors. The mission of the After School Sport and Arts Initiative (ASSAI) is to invest in enriched after school programming that enhances participants’ overall health, learning, and well-being.  

Position Description: 

Responsible for the planning and delivery of sports and arts programs, which includes safe, fun and age-appropriate activities focused on artistic processes or skill development. This is a lead instructor role, and the successful applicant should be comfortable teaching kids a variety of art forms or sport/physical activities. This position will work as a part of a team for program planning, delivery, and debriefing. All team members are supported in completing required training such as First Aid Certification, High Five Certification, Trauma Aware Practice, and other professional development opportunities as they arise. Program Leaders must be able to build rapport with students and assist Support Workers in managing conflicts and behaviors as needed.

Requirements:

The successful applicant must have valid Emergency First Aid & Food SAFE certificates (can be provided by HG Rec) and have a clean criminal record with vulnerable sector checks.

  • Must possess strong leadership, creativity, and assertiveness skills, being comfortable to lead activities with groups of up to 15 students.
  • Must have experience and an interest in working with children aged 5-12.
  • Must have knowledge of age-appropriate, fun, and safe sports and/or arts activities.
  • Must be skilled at building connections and establishing trust with young people.
  • Must be highly reliable, willing to learn, and motivated.
  • Must have a working knowledge of healthy child development.
  • Must have good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Must be willing to complete any required certifications or training.
  • Should have training or professional development and experience in building rapport with participants and positive behavior support.
  • Ability to travel between Masset & Port Clements is an asset.
  • Proficiency in Google Drive and access to a laptop and internet connection are assets.
  • Ability to act as a Support Worker if they are unavailable is an asset.

Duties:

Including but not limited to:

  • Leading program activities (giving instructions, helping students complete the activity, monitoring safety)
  • Working with other team members to plan programs (writing activity plans, purchasing program supplies with ASSAI funds, preparing materials)
  • Program delivery, debrief, clean up, and preparing snacks for students.
  • Managing and reporting challenging behaviors, as well as promoting prosocial behavior.
  • Building rapport with students.
  • Recording attendance.
  • Adhering to all ASSAI, HG Rec, and School District #50 policies.
  • Maintaining a high standard of health and safety during all activities.
  • Participating in training and development opportunities when offered.
