Job Summary


As part of the Rediscovery Team, the Senior Guide works alongside the Camp Supervisor, Junior Guides, other staff, and volunteers to deliver the Rediscovery Program directly to participants. In this role, you will lead by example, fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all participants. Senior Guides are responsible for modeling positive behaviors, sharing knowledge, and ensuring program activities align with Haida values.

Term:


Fixed-term seasonal contract, 3 months per year (June 1 to August 31,2025), with the possibility of extension to mid-September.

Compensation:

In Camp: $250.00 per day

In Town: $25.00 per hour

Location:

Primary Camp: T’aalan Stl’ang (formerly known as Lepas Bay)

Administrative Work: Old Massett

Responsible to:

Rediscovery T’aalan Stl’ang Haida Gwaii Society Executive Director and Camp Supervisor.


Key Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Implement the Rediscovery schedule.
  • Organize and facilitate workshops and camp activities.
  • Supervise Junior Guides and camp participants to ensure engagement and safety.
  • Ensure that all activities comply with Camp Safety Standards.
  • Follow Rediscovery Policies and Procedures.
  • Participate in and contribute to daily team meetings.
  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exercise sound judgment in interactions with staff and participants.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative camp environment.
  • Take initiative and promote teamwork to achieve program goals.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • Experience and knowledge of outdoor recreational activities such as camping, hiking, and group sports
  • Knowledge and understanding of the natural and cultural history of Haida Gwaii, beginner Xaad Kil, Haida song and dance and the ability to share this knowledge at camp with participants.
  • Knowledge and/or experience at T’aalan Stl’ang and the surrounding area
  • Has healthy coping mechanisms and wellness plan for time in camp
  • Sound personnel practices and organizational development
  • Strong communication skills and a positive attitude.


Conditions of Employment:

  • Cleared Police Information Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Current Wilderness Advanced First Aid, or willingness to obtain before camp starts.
  • Medically cleared to perform physical duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs and completing multiday hikes across varied terrain.
  • Must be willing to work in an isolated camp setting at T’aalan Stl’ang (formerly known as Lepas Bay) for periods of up to 15 days, with a maximum of 20 days.
  • 1+ years of experience working with youth, preferably in a school or camp setting.
  • Novice or Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
  • Current Bronze Medallion Lifesaving certification (an asset)
  • Valid Food Safe certification (an asset)
  • Valid Red Cross Standard First Aid (an asset)
