Position Summary
The Mental Wellness & Addiction Counsellor is responsible for supporting individuals and families in community by providing direct psychosocial care, care planning, counselling and group work, system navigation and advocacy, education and linkage to relevant specialized complex care resources while facilitating client self-management.
The Mental Wellness and Addiction Counsellor reports to the Mental Wellness Program Coordinator.
Responsibilities
•
Provides outreach to the community of Gaw Tlagee (Old Massett) and surrounding communities
•
Provides a continuum of services such as: prevention, promotion, and education; assessments and care planning for individuals and families
•
Delivers consultation on cultural and clinical interventions
•
Delivers crisis response when communities are impacted by critical events
•
Monitors clients’ Monitor clients’ mental status and progress for possible medication side-effects and evaluate clients’ response to treatment.
•
Participate in in-services, inter-disciplinary case conferences and team meetings, as required by Niislaa Naay and share information
•
Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, educational resources and other health care professionals/providers to achieve excellence in health services and education
•
Demonstrate and/or provide guidance on clinical/health related tasks
•
Provide an ongoing commitment to client services and continuous improvement to ensure best practice client services and the most effective delivery of service
•
Bridge clients to appropriate community services
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
•
Knowledge of the health and wellness governance landscape in First Nations health in BC, particularly the Haida Nation and relative to mental wellness. Knowledge of and an ability to integrate Haida cultural principles and protocols into practice.
•
Knowledge of theories, practices, and principles relative to mental wellness, suicide prevention, Trauma-Informed Care, and mental health emergency response, particularly relative to First Nations in BC, including the current programs and services available.
•
Knowledge of Indigenous mental wellness health system needs, including mental health and wellness issues that face BC First Nations.
•
Demonstrated ability to complete initial and ongoing client assessments (clinical and diagnostic reasoning) through appropriate/prescribed technical, therapeutic, safety type interventions.
•
Ability to effectively apply conflict resolution skills.
•
A commitment to learning and understanding Haida Laws and protocol to ensure mental health services are aligned with Haida culture and values
•
Demonstrated computer skills including the use of Windows based programs
•
Demonstrated data analysis skills including appropriate data analysis and reporting tools
Education, Training, and Experience
•
Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Nursing, OR a master’s degree in Counselling or Social Work from an accredited university.
•
Minimum 2 years recent related Mental Health & Addictions work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
•
Qualify as a Registered Health Professional under the BC Health Professions Act with the relevant professional association as applicable.
•
Valid BC Driver’s License.
