The Lifeguard Instructor I, under the direction of the Aquatic Leader, works independently, assumes
responsibility and takes initiative to complete duties related to pool filtration, chemistry, lifeguarding,
instructing, administration and special events.
This position performs lifeguarding duties and class instruction at indoor swimming and wading pools by
observing and exercising control over the activities of the public and patrons in and out of the water;
ensures public safety; rescues patrons in distress; enforces pool rules regarding public conduct and health;
and ejects or calls for the removal of troublesome patrons. The incumbent maintains a positive, professional
and guest-centric approach.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Working knowledge of lifesaving; patron control; resuscitation; first aid; and pool lifeguarding
policies, procedures, and techniques.
• Working knowledge of swimming, water safety, rescue, and pupil evaluation policies, practices, and
procedures.
• Instructional ability to explain, demo and teach classes, as well as an ability to, detect and correct
movements patterns and provide appropriate and well-timed feedback to participants.
• Aptitude in customer service – Successful candidate will focus on improving patron experience and
manage complaints in a respectful and professional manner.
• Time management – Successful candidate can establish priorities to meet deadlines in
order to carry out multiple tasks or projects at the same time.
• Decision Making - Ability to prioritize decisions and make on spot decisions with minimal direction.
• Confidence – Ability to take their work seriously and professionally, motivate others, teach classes
to children and adults.

DUTIES & RESPONSILITIES:
• Perform lifeguarding, first aid, and pool maintenance duties in accordance with associated governing
bodies.
• Ability to supervise and scan the activities of large groups of facility users at pools.
• Teaches learn-to-swim, stroke improvement, and water safety; maintains lesson sheets; assists with
arrangements for course times and classes; prepares lesson plans and resource materials; and
evaluates and qualifies pupils.
• Supervise the activities of all participants and guests, providing direction regarding appropriate
conduct.
• Supports and/or provides leadership to seasonal and camp instructors, where applicable
• Provides information to inquiring patrons regarding aquatic and/or facility programs offered, and
refers unusual concerns, complaints or inquires to the Aquatic Lead
• Organize, instruct and review aquatic lessons, programs and special events.
• Perform aquatic facility janitorial practices and procedures.
• Maintain and troubleshoot the chemistry and filtration of all aquatic facilities.
• Prepare and submit reports, evaluations and statistical information.
• Complete administrative and other duties, as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & ABILITY:
• Working knowledge of lifesaving, specialized rescue, patron control, resuscitation, first aid
equipment, as well as, department and pool policies, procedures and techniques
• Working knowledge of the safe operation, adjustment, and control of swimming pool water
treatment, filtration and heating equipment
• Working knowledge of aquatic facility janitorial practices and procedures.
• Ability to instruct and relate effectively with pupils of all ages and physical abilities.
• Ability as a strong swimmer and excellent physical condition.
• Experience in planning, supervising and evaluating programs and events.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public,
internal and external agencies/partners, and address varied audiences on topics
related to aquatic facilities and programs.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and adapt within a dynamic environment.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in computer software programs, Microsoft Office, Excel etc.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS:

FITNESS REQUIREMENT:
• The successful applicant will be required to meet all physical standards of the Lifesaving Society’s
National Lifeguard Service Award every two months.
• Able to perform manual labour (up to 50lbs.)
• Full range of body movement required to complete job activities
