Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

HaiCo is focused on building Haida owned enterprises that reflect Haida cultural values, invest in the training and mentorship of Haida Citizens, create careers and improve the lives of Haida Citizens and the economy of Haida Gwaii. 

 

Haida Wild has an exciting permanent full-time opportunity for an individual that will play a key role in building organizational capacity through optimized systems and well-developed business plans.  The individual will provide guidance to Haico on exploring fresh business prospects, such as purchasing licenses and quotas.  The Haida Wild Manager will also be responsible for managing the Pacific Integrated Commercial Fishing Initiative (PICFI) license and quota for the Council of the Haida Nation (CHN), as well as work together to enhance Haida staff capacity.  Haida Wild invites applications from qualified, highly motivated, and dynamic individuals to fill the position.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Advise HaiCo management on new business development opportunities including the acquisition of license and quota
  • Develop business plans for new development opportunities
  • Co-allocate license and quotas with CHN
  • Collaborate with CHN to promote the available license and quota to Haida fishers and to build capacity
  • Oversee contract management with the license and quota user, including collection of payments
  • Oversee staff recruitment, compensation, training & mentorship, retention, and performance management
  • Support development of annual operating budget and plans
  • Implement effective systems and develop short-term and long-term action plans to improve administration and management of PICFI licenses
  • Oversee Canadian Food Inspection Agency reporting and ensure that the fish plant is compliant and following standard operating procedures
  • Implement effective communications with HaiCo management
  • Source and secure funding opportunities for plant maintenance and upgrades, health and safety requirements, and business development opportunities
  • Liaise with government and industry as needed
  • Small-scale project management of pilot initiatives, e.g. smokehouse program, retail store etc.

 

TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE

  • 5 years of demonstrated leadership experience in commercial fishing and seafood industry
  • Project Management
  • Strong knowledge of local fishing and seafood industry is considered an asset
  • Bachelor’s Degree in business or related field, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Knowledge of (CFIA) Canadian Food Inspection Agency regulations
