Job Description

Executive Director — Sandspit Community Society


Hours: flexible, can be full-time or part-time, according to applicants availability

Wages: $40, 000 to $90, 000 yearly, depending on whether applicant wishes to work full or part time

Location: flexible within Haida Gwaii, but preference will be given to applicants residing within the Sandspit community


The Sandspit Community Society (SCS) Executive Director (ED) manages the day to

day operations of a successful, non-profit society that has been actively spearheading

and overseeing community related projects in K’il Kun / Sandspit since 2012. The ED

serves as the lead coordinator for all SCS activities, including the Sandspit Visitor

Center, Sandspit Recreation Committee, Moresby Market and Sandspit Trails as well as

events like Logger Sports Day, Wild Harvest Festival, and community holiday events.


Tasks include but are not limited to:


With the direction of our Board of Directors, the ED oversees all happenings of the organization, including working closely with project leads, assisting with grant writing, sourcing appropriate funding, administrative duties, outreach, reporting back to board and members, coordinating meetings, writing our online newsletter, social media event promotion, and budgeting.


Management tasks:


- Organizing and leading quarterly board meetings and AGM

- Facilitating periodic strategic planning

- Developing partnerships with other island-based organizations and businesses and facilitating

community engagement with SCS activities

- Project management support for project leads through regular meetings and communication

- Assessing and developing new project ideas


Finance:


- Budgeting

- Coordinating with bookkeeper who handles bookkeeping, tax filing, and annual reports

- Payroll

- Accounts receivable and payable


Development:


- Proposal writing and reporting

- Researching new funding opportunities


Communications:


- Handling public inquiries (email/phone)

- Press releases & event promotion

- Social media management

- Website updates

- Newsletter

- Community calendar


Human resources:


- Hiring/contracting support

- Employment record keeping


Work Flow:


The ED provides two streams of support: the first is overall administrative/management support for the organization, the second is oversight and support for SCS projects and events.

Administrative and management support is steady through the year with defined deadlines for key activities like annual reports, AGM, and board meetings.

Conversely, projects and events ebb and flow seasonally. Each SCS project or event has a dedicated lead. It’s expected that the ED will meet with those leads at intervals relative to the needs of the project/event. The SCS annual calendar provides an overview of the year’s activities for general planning purposes.

Within this work flow there is flexibility in work location and management of working hours to suit the ED, as long as organizational support is available and deadlines are met.


Qualifications:


- The ED will report to the board of directors, but should be self-disciplined, self-motivated, and able to

work without direct supervision.

- The right candidate will be trustworthy, dependable, and community minded, with strong

leadership skills.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

- Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.

- Experience managing employees an asset.

- Experience with grant writing an asset.

- Experience with grant management an asset.

- Experience with working for a non-profit organization an asset.

Schedule:


- Can be a full-time or part-time position depending on candidate. Workload may fluctuate seasonally.

- Flexible days/hours, but may require access to evenings/weekends depending on relevant events,

meetings etc.


Start Date:


- Flexible, but mid to late February 2025 preferred.


Compensation:


- Between $40,000 to $90,000 yearly; pay is negotiable, depending on desire to work full or part time, skills and experience.
