Job Description

Title: Copper River Sockeye Salmon Field Technician

Type: Full time, 35-40 hours per week from mid-April to June 2025. Overtime to be expected.

Location: Based in Skidegate or Sandspit.

Salary: $23.32 – $26.23 per hour based on experience.  

Description of work

Under the direction of the Salmon Biologist, the Sockeye Salmon Technician will work to enumerate Sockeye Salmon as they pass the Copper River fish fence. Duties will include driving to and from the site, lifting panels in and out of the river, identifying and counting Sockeye Salmon, and recording accurate and detailed field data. Additional duties include operating the generator, assisting on other Haida Fisheries projects as needed, and potentially collecting biological samples to assist in ongoing research.

This position requires full-time, overnight night shifts departing and arriving from Skidegate. Overtime and weekend shifts are likely. For an interested candidate, there may be an opportunity to continue on as a Fisheries Field Technician and extend employment until August, 2025. Candidates are required to have a Valid BC Class 5 Drivers licence.

Qualifications & Assets

  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License and access to reliable transportation
  • Able to work overnight shifts, willing to work overtime and on weekends
  • Knowledge of the biology of Pacific Salmon
  • Comfortable working around water (docks, boats, rivers)
  • Reliable
  • Effective interpersonal skills
