Child Center in Gaw Tlagee Coordination Contract

Wage: $30/hour Hours: 15-30 hours per week
The Child Center in Gaw Tlagee/Masset Board of Directors is seeking an organized, self-motivated, and community minded individual to support the essential and foundational work required to launch the Child Center project. Priority will be given to qualified applicants who are able to stay on at Child Centre, once operational, and continue to support the vision for the Child Center in Gaw Tlagee/Masset.
Our aim is to provide full-time sustainable and affordable child care to the community of Gaw Tlagee/Masset, which embodies a holistic child-centered model of care rooted in inquiry, connection, and play. Our goal is be to be operational and established within the Daaxigan Sk’adáa Née space by September 2025
Programming will be reflective of Xaads Xiinaangaa, Haida ways of knowing, protocol, language and culture. It will follow a cyclical model which supports young ones in connecting with the rhythms of the natural world through interaction with the seasons, lands, waters, and creatures of Haida Gwaii. Programming rooted in the educational values of nature-based and child-led learning to emphasize respectful relationship building between little ones, the natural world, their educators, their peers, and themselves.
Our vision of sustainability prioritizes staff satisfaction and retention by paying all staff a living wage before the provincial wage increase, funding professional development opportunities, and advocating for early childhood educators to be recognized and compensated as professionals who provide an essential community service.
Contractor duties will primarily be executed alongside a team of dedicated volunteers and the Haida Gwaii Child Care and Resources Referral Team.
Contractor Responsibilities Include:
- Working alongside the Child Center in Gaw Tlagee Board of Directors to establish Child Centre programs, policies and procedures and ensure they are reflective of community and cultural values and in compliance with the BC Child Care Licensing Regulations and Health and Safety standards.
- Managing Child Centre financials including spearheading budgeting and funding applications through community grants and provincial child care initiatives
- Supporting the recruitment and hiring of qualified early childhood educators
- Working in collaboration with the CCRR team and Northern Health Child Care Licensing Officer to secure operation licensing.
Preferred Qualifications:
-Early childhood education certifications and experience
- Working knowledge of provincial child care licensing regulation and operational funding
- Training or interest in Forest and Nature based programming
- Awareness of Xaads Xiinaangaa, Haida ways of knowing, protocol, language and culture
- Experience in developing policies and procedures in the not-for-profit sector
- Successful grant application experience
- A Valid BC Driver’s License
