Job Summary:

The camp cook is responsible for providing nutritious and healthy meals within the allocated budget. The cook's responsibilities are to prepare menus, determine portions, and prepare complete meals for staff and participants; assess food needs, track food inventory and order needed items; clean and maintain the kitchen, dining room, and work areas; ensure compliance with established food production and hygiene standards; all other related tasks to ensure harmony within the camp. Duties also include monitoring the quality of food, minimizing waste, and prioritizing foods that are used first, especially produce and other perishables. Meals include breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks when needed. Responsible for purchasing all groceries and operation of kitchen facilities, making sure all appliances are in proper safe working order. Group sizes range between 18-30 people.

Start Date:

June 1, 2025

Term:

Fixed-term seasonal contract, 3 months (June 1 to August 31,2025), with the possibility of extension to mid-September.

Compensation:

  • In Camp: $300.00 per day
  • In Town: $30.00 per hour

Location:

T’aalan St’lang (formerly known as Lepas Bay)

Responsible to:

Rediscovery T’aalan St’lang Haida Gwaii Society Executive Director.


Knowledge and Skills

  • Past cooking experience for larger groups in an off-grid wilderness setting
  • Able to prepare and serve meals efficiently and on schedule
  • Proven cooking experience, including experience as a restaurant cook or prep cook
  • Knowledgeable in traditional Haida foods and able to prepare and cook them.
  • Having the skill and ability to bake bread
  • Excellent understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients, equipment, and procedures.
  • Accuracy and speed in executing assigned tasks.
  • Familiar with industry’s best practices
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.


Conditions of Employment

  • Up-to-date Food Safe Certification required
  • Up to-date Cleared Police Information Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Must be willing to work in an isolated camp setting at T’aalan Stl’ang (formerly known as Lepas Bay) for periods of up to 15 days, with a maximum duration of 20 days.
  • Must be medically and physically fit to assume the responsibilities of this position
  • Must be self-motivated, a team player, and responsible.
  • Must be willing to pre-plan menus cooperatively and stay within an allocated budget
  • Valid Novice or Class 5 Drivers Licence. • Up-to-date certifications in Red Cross Standard First Aid and or Wilderness Advaced First Aid (an asset)
