Job Description

 

The Haida Gwaii Regional Recreation Commission (HG Rec) and School District #50 Haida Gwaii (SD50) are seeking a dynamic and community-driven After School Sports & Arts Initiative (ASSAI) Coordinator to lead the planning, delivery, and evaluation of evidence-based after-school programs for youth ages 5–13. Funded by the BC Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the ASSAI Coordinator is jointly employed by HG Rec and SD50. ASSAI supports students through safe, accessible, high-quality, and fun programming that meets the needs of school communities. The ASSAI program offers sports and arts activities for Kindergarten to Grade 8 students experiencing barriers to recreation due to financial, geographical, cultural, family circumstances, disability, behavioural and other factors.

 

The ASSAI Coordinator will build on previous years of programming to determine needs and develop a robust program in response. The ASSAI Coordinator will hire and manage a team of Program Leaders and Support Workers (Persons of Rapport) to aid in program delivery. They will be based in Masset (HG Rec office at 1587 McLeod St.) to manage programming in ‘Wáan Kún - Port Clements and Masset (Port Clements Elementary School & Daaxiigan Sḵ’adaa Née School). In addition to the ASSAI program, the Coordinator will spend approximately ten (10) hours per week working on HG Rec duties as the Masset Recreation Coordinator. These duties will directly support the HG Rec Coordinator and HG Rec’s mission to foster an inviting recreation & leisure environment accessible to all ages & abilities on Haida Gwaii.

 

Work Hours & Compensation


●      30 hours/week

●      $30-35/hour (based on education & experience)

●      September 22nd, 2025 – July 15th, 2026 (1-year seasonal contract) with room to sign a new 3-year contract following first year.

●      This may be subject to change pending the funding from SD50, at which time the funding may no longer be available, or a potential transition of the program from HG Rec to SD50. The coordinator will also receive access to a work phone, paid for via HG Rec/ASSAI funds. The Hours of work for this position are flexible, but the Coordinator will primarily work daytime hours to lead programs.

 

ASSAI Coordinator Responsibilities (30 hours/week)


●      Develop, deliver, and evaluate after-school sports and arts programs.

●      Hire, supervise, and support Program Leaders and Support Workers.

●      Maintain inventory, order supplies, and oversee program budget without overspend.

●      Facilitate community and youth engagement in program planning.

●      Ensure programs meet all insurance and safety requirements.

●      Prepare reports for SD50, HG Rec, and BC Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture.

●      Additional instruction as per program requirements.

●      Program marketing, payroll, registration, and documentation.

●      Training development and coordination.

 

Qualifications & Requirements


●      A degree or diploma in social sciences, human services, recreation, or community support is preferred.

●      3+ years of experience working with youth & coordinating programming.

●      Knowledge of healthy child development.

●      Strong leadership, organizational, budgeting, and communication skills.

●      Excellent conflict resolution and time management skills.

●      Ability to work collaboratively with school staff, community partners, and families.

●      Cultural competency and ability to work with diverse populations.

●      Must have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a reliable, personal vehicle for travel between communities and moving equipment (mileage reimbursed at $0.72/km for out-of-town travel).

●      Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (required before start date).

●      Ability to carry heavier loads (up to 25-50 lbs).

●      HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development, First Aid, and Food Safety training (assets).
