Territorial Lands Manager (Full Time)




The Gitxaala Nation has an employment opportunity for a Territorial Lands Manager to work within the Gitxaala Territorial Management Agency.
Gitxaała Territorial Management Agency (GTMA) is responsible for the integrated management and monitoring of Gitxaała natural and cultural resources. GTMA develops strategic plans and policies for terrestrial and marine territories, facilitates scientific and community-based research, and coordinates regulatory engagement and assessments. Working with a mandate from the Hereditary Table and Elected Council, GTMA provides government services to the Nation and collaborates and engages with BC, Canada and other Indigenous governments to ensure the continued enrichment and protection of Gitxaała values and interests.
 Coordinate the development and implementation of a Gitxaala Land Use Plan;
 Conduct community-based research and information collection to support the development of the Gitxaala Land Use Plan;
 Prepare and contribute to detailed research, including jurisdictional and legislative framework reviews;
 Prepare policy, procedures, and guidelines as required to guide industry within Gitxaala Territory;
 Provide technical and strategic advice to supervisor, Elected Council, and Hereditary Leaders;
 Work with the Province of BC and the Government of Canada to undertake specific area-based planning in Gitxaala Territory, ie: Conservancy Areas, Parks, Ecological Reserves;
 Work with the Province of BC, Government of Canada, and other First Nations on land use planning initiatives relevant to Gitxaala Nation;
 Coordinate fish and wildlife projects, such as habitat restoration, in partnership with other governments or solely by Gitxaala Nation, this will include writing funding proposals;
 Review forestry and mining plans to ensure development within Gitxaala Territory occurs in accordance with Gitxaala governance, law and policy;
 Provide advice and guidance on Environmental Assessments;
 Conduct research and coordinate any required field work;
 Plan meetings and develop meeting materials including agendas, memos, and presentations;
 Respond to community inquiries with respect to land use issues, this will include proactive community engagement

Lands Manager –
 Provide GIS support to GTMA staff members; and
 Other duties as necessary.
Required Education and Qualifications:
 Minimum Bachelor’s degree in or related to planning, resource management, social and environmental sciences, and/or other relevant environmental discipline(s);
 Minimum of 3-5 years of planning experience, including land use and forestry;
 Superior technical writing, editing, and verbal communication skills;
 Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and provide situational leadership;
 Ability to take direction and to complete tasks in a timely manner;
 Previous experience working with First Nations or in multidisciplinary groups;
 Demonstrated experience working with, and understanding of, resource management related issues from a BC First Nations’ perspective, ie: familiarity with Great Bear Rainforest Land Use Order;
 General understanding of current issues, challenges, and opportunities affecting Gitxaala;
 Versatile and adaptable with ability to work in a self-directed, multidisciplinary team setting; and
 Project management and/or coordination experience.
This position will ideally be based in Prince Rupert, BC with an anticipated start date in early January 2021.
Compensation will be negotiated with the successful candidate based on qualifications.
