Old Massett Village Council, with an on-reserve population of approximately 750 members and an overall membership of approximately 3077 members, is situated on the beautiful North Coast of Haida Gwaii. Employment by the Old Massett Village Council ranges between 70-100 full and part-time employees. General operations are comprised of, but not limited to Capital Works, Housing, Registry, Education, Xaad Kil, Finance, Social Development, Emergency Services and Energy

Summary – Roles and Responsibilities
• Being a change agent, working with community members to encourage and support zero waste behaviours and actions (reuse, reduce, compost, recycle)
• Responsible for delivering outreach education on the recycling, composting and waste reduction programs
• Working with youth, council, and administration to be fellow educational leaders in recycling and composting

Job Duties
• Participates in developing and implementing waste reduction programs. Examples include a reuse program, composting program, recycling program, holiday waste reduction campaign, food waste reduction campaign, and illegal dumping prevention
• Supports the waste management team in all communication/educations related work. Examples include developing brochures, signs, posters, educational videos, newsletters, and social media posts
• Initiates and conducts community outreach activities with community groups and organizations to include, but not limited to, workshops and presentations to promote proper source separation
• Develops and delivers students, classes, or entire student assembly, promoting waste reduction, re-use, recycling and composting to include, but not limited to, assisting schools with greening activities to enhance diversion.
• Co-ordinates with special event (festival) organizers to promote separation and sorting of compostables, recyclables and waste materials
• Develops and implements special communications and education projects such as contests and awareness programs for Compost Awareness Week, Waste Reduction Week, Earth Day, etc.
• Develops and conducts information sessions and/or facility tours for special audiences as needed
• Coordinates and attends display/booths
• Works with waste management crew to roll-out the program and:
• Co-ordinate, assemble and deliver recycling and composting equipment and guides to each household
• Audit collected curb side recyclable and compostable materials
• Engage with residents on proper recycling and composting practices
• Attends training, continues to learn, and keep informed of all and any updates to the recycling and compost programs in the community and beyond into the province
• Keep in contact with the pick-up crew to monitor recycling and composting from households and provide the
• community, classrooms or individuals with feedback, encouragement, and tips to recycle or compost better
