Job Description:

The Mental Wellness Counsellor helps individuals, families and the community identify and deal with addictions and mental health concerns. The Mental Wellness Clinician is responsible for mental health support services for individuals and families in the community by providing screening and assessment services, brief interventions as needed, counselling services and referrals for consultation with appropriate service providers, agencies, and facilities.

Roles & Responsibilities
• Provide screening, assessment and counselling services for individuals and families.
• Develop a plan of mental health support with individuals and/or families and make referrals to appropriate agencies, programs, or facilities.
• Provide assessment and continuing service based on the needs of the community and mental health clients.
• Follow up counselling including safety plans and referral if needed.
• In collaboration with the health Team plan, facilitate and evaluate health promotion and prevention programs, services and activities with a focus mental health and wellness.
• Stimulate new programs to address the mental health needs of the community.
• Advocate for community members, promoting the principles of equality and fairness to assist clients in receiving unbiased treatment and a share of health services and resources proportionate to their needs.
• Participate in client conferencing initiated by the client and/or service providers.
• Liaise as necessary with community partners, organizations, and relevant authorities, fostering and developing positive working relationships.
• Maintain client and administrative health records following professional and legal guidelines
• Maintain a record of all program and service delivery, activities, and events according to the identified health indicators for statistical and reporting purposes.
• Safeguard the trust of clients that information learned in the context of a professional relationship is shared outside the health team only with the client’s permission or as legally required in accordance with the OMVC Confidentiality Policy.
• Submit the Monthly Wellness Counsellor Report to the Health Director on or before the 10th day of the following month.

• Maintain counselling skills and keep up to date with current issues and trends by networking and attending appropriate workshops, conferences and training programs as required.
• Attend and participate in weekly Northern Haida Gwaii Hospital and Health Centre multidisciplinary rounds.
• Attend and participate in Health Services Staff meetings and other meetings as required
• Participate in the ongoing accreditation process.
• Adhere to the Niislaa Naay Healing House Society Conditions of Employment Policies (Employee Handbook)
• Perform other related duties as required.

Education & Training
• Bachelor’s degree in a health or health related science.
• Experience in trauma-based practice.
• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check according to the Criminal Record Review Act, Ministry of Public Safety and the Solicitor General
• Computer skills to effectively use spreadsheet and word processing programs (Excel and Word)
• Valid Class 5 BC Drivers’ License
