Job Title: Hardware Manager

Location: Masset, BC Haida Gwaii Co-op Home Centre

Reports to: General Manager


Role Overview:

Reporting to the General Manager, and as part of the Leadership Team, this role is responsible for the overall operations of the Hardware Department while providing strategic leadership to the respective team members to ensure operational efficiencies and processes are followed and align with the strategy, objectives and vision of the Masset Home Centre.

This role will work collaboratively with the Lumber Manager on the effective execution of merchandising, marketing, image/fixed assets, and talent development in addition to driving sales. The Hardware Manager will contribute to the Co-op in living the corporate values of Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Responsibility.


Provide leadership and direction in the development and achievement of operational and financial results and department contributions including sales, margins, expenses, inventory and sales per employee hour 9SPEH) in the department

Responsible and deliver safe efficient, and effective operations of the department

Responsible for effective project estimates, ordering of department inventories, regular, seasonal and promotional orders

Ensures effective training in the areas of customer service, product knowledge, inventory control, and merchandising

Through the timely analysis of period end statements and other relevant financial information, lead the process to identify areas of improvement; involve team members for their input and working with the Hardware Manager as required

Provide recommendations/action plans as required to address operational deficiencies to the General Manager leading any necessary changes

Collaborate with the Lumber Manager to come up with innovative ideas to help in achieving results and meeting required expectations pertaining to the operation of the department

Ensure team members are kept abreast of Co-op promotions, goals, performance, community involvement, etc., by holding daily and weekly tailgate meetings; document meetings and provide to the General Manager.


Ensure department wide adherence to merchandising standards as per policy, standard operating procedures and best practices

Promotions are set up to standard using promotional merchandise and POP material; team members are to be made familiar of the promotion and expected to promote the products in it

Maintenance expectations of the department is captured via written daily, weekly, monthly sanitation and housekeeping standards; housekeeping is assigned to team members and  accountabilities established

Team members understand and adhere to the dress code at all times

Ensure adherence to Asset protection, internal security policies, and the Co-op’s consumption policy. Be alert to pilferage and/or unauthorized removal of merchandise or association assets. lead by example and ensure all team members are educated and trained


In partnership with the Lumber Manager, execute effective/innovative marketing strategies while looking for new ways to enhance business growth

Keep up to date on industry trends; identify external competitive pressures and provide feedback / recommendations to the General Manager to improve department operations and competitiveness

Develop and maintain a contractor contact list for marketing purposes

Brand / Customer Service:

Ensure prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service is provided at all times; act as a role model to the team; provide ongoing coaching to team members on service level expectations

Respond to escalated service queries and gauge customer needs and service satisfaction levels

Ensures the department adheres to or exceeds expectations and are consistent with the execution of such standards

The Hassle-free Guarantee Program is understood by all team members and is followed

Understand and administer the Co-ops merchandise returns policy

Actively participate in Co-op sponsored events in the community

Image/Fixed Assets:

Ensure proper management of assets and adherence to a maintenance schedule

Ensure adherence to the image checklist as per facilities and equipment

Continually monitor the upkeep and appearance of the sales area, building supplies yard, stockroom, warehouse area, product storage areas, receiving area, office, and equipment

Administrative Responsibilities:

Actively participate in the preparation of the annual budget, claims, invoices, and all other paperwork is done in a timely manner, is accurate, and meets established policies and standard operational procedures

Ensure that all records related to markdowns, transfers, receiving, claims, invoicing, and retail price files are accurately maintained and delivered within established timliness

Health & Safety:

Provide leadership and lead by example in the area of Health and Safety (H&S), including participation in H & S activities

Ensure team members understand and comply with H&S policies, procedures and regulations, and safe job procedures, and WorkSafe BC protocols

Leading by example, ensure all team members wear the appropriate PPE required

Ensure all team members complete all mandatory and relevant safety training; sign offs are sent for filing in personnel files

Human Resources:

Through effective leadership, coaching, and providing ongoing feedback, foster a positive work environment that enables the engagement of all team members in the pursuit of desired results

Follow proper recruitment procedures as outlined by the Co-op’s procedures and the Collective Bargaining Agreement CBA; partner with the General Manager as required on hiring decisions

In collaboration with the General Manager, administer an onboarding and orientation, and initial training plan for all new team members ensuring completion of all components

Administer personnel policies and the CBA in a fair and respectful manner; in collaboration with the lumber manager, provide guidance to team members in the interpretation and application of same and other Co-op Practices and procedures.

Responsible for helping complete annual team member reviews; assist in creating team member action plans for development

Address performance issues in a timely manner; disciplines are to be dealt with as per policy and in accordance with the CBA and Employee Policy Manual; all written disciplines and up are discussed the General Manager or Office Manager prior to being given

In conjunction with the General Manager, identify ongoing team training needs

To increase transfer of learning, follow-up with all team members who attend workshops for their key take-aways

To increase competency as a leader, attend internal and / or external professional development opportunities on a yearly basis.


Provide leadership, direction, ongoing feedback and coaching to team members, including those who may assist the department from other areas of the store or association.


Education: Grade 12 or equivalent

Related Experience: 1-3 years in a retail environment with some supervisory or lead experience

Experience in the construction industry is preferred

Experience working with office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Designations, Certifications, Specialized training: Forklift Certificate, WHMIS, Valid Drivers License
