Climate Change Researcher
This is a short term contract, in-person opportunity out of the Haida Heritage Centre with travel around the island.

The researcher will work closely with local Elders, Haida Gwaii Museum, Skidegate Band Council, and Haida Fisheries to study the historical Haida approaches to climate change as it relates to the sockeye run up the Copper River.

Some responsibilities include:

– Study and document effects of climate change at the Copper River Fishery and Copper Bay Village

– Plan and conduct recorded oral interviews of Haida elders on historical seasonal indicators of the sockeye run

– Access archives at Haida Gwaii Museum and Haida Fisheries to research historical fluctuations of climate and impacts of modern climate change

– Contribute to risk assessment model for Copper River and suggest practices to protect Copper River

– Compare and contrast traditional mitigation methods with modern ones

– Project future state of the Copper River fishery and what can be done to preserve the fishery (using traditional methods to address modern climate change issues)

Qualifications

– Excellent written and verbal communication skills

– Organizational and time management skills

– Proficient in data collection, recording and analysis

– Proven knowledge or degree in Environmental Sciences

– Experience with recorded interviews is a bonus

Contract length: 6 months

Expected start date: 2022-01-03

Job Types: Part-time, Temporary, Contract

Pay: $30.00-$40.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday
