The Village of Masset continues to accept applications for the position of Chief Administrative Officer with this extended posting. The current CAO is approaching retirement but is willing to provide support for a lengthy transition if required. The right applicant will be able to demonstrate a good fit with the community specifically, and Haida Gwaii overall. Strong management experience is a must and while previous municipal experience is an asset, finding the best fit for the community is our ultimate goal.

The management team of the Village consists of the CAO and CFO who work closely with Council to develop and implement village policy. Management is supported by an Administrative Assistant and Financial Assistant in the office, 4 full time members of the Public Works crew and a shared (island-wide) Grant Writer. The village also operates the Masset Municipal Airport which has an Airport Manager and two additional staff. Seasonal employment for 4-6 employees rounds out our typical workforce in any year.

The Village of Masset has been working on a number of planning initiatives over the past few years which will form the basis for re-imagining the future of the community. An Integrated Official Community plan was completed in 2018. A Housing Needs Assessment, Child Care Needs Assessment, Wildfire plan and Island-wide Animal Control study are all completing in 2020 with an Asset Management project planned for 2021 These plans will help to form the basis for revitalization of the community in years to come under the direction of the new CAO.

Located on the North end of Haida Gwaii the community offers a unique West Coast lifestyle with access to beaches, hiking, hunting, fishing boating and more. Being somewhat remote there can be challenges with planning projects and accessing resources at times, however, these drawbacks can be overcome with good planning and a firm grasp of the local strengths and opportunities. The right candidate will not only be attracted to the recreational and lifestyle opportunities we present, but have a demonstrated ability to deal with challenging conditions as they arise.
