Shipping and Marine Safety Administrator – Term Position


DESCRIPTION

The Council of the Haida Nation (CHN) with support of the Secretariat of the Haida Nation (SHN) is engaged in implementation of integrated marine plans for the waters around Haida Gwaii. This includes the Marine Plan Partnership for the North Pacific Coast (MaPP), the Pacific North Coast Integrated Management Area Initiative (PNCIMA), Marine Protected Area (MPA) Network Planning for the Northern Shelf Bioregion, and a new regional collaborative initiative on oceans planning and management, marine environmental protection, shipping and marine safety.

The Marine Program provides technical support to each of these processes as required.  The CHN is engaged with Canada on oceans management and protection initiatives including shipping safety and emergency response planning.

The Shipping and Marine Safety Administrator reports to the Program Manager for Marine Planning. This is a one-year term position employment contract with possibility of renewal.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with Marine Planning Program staff members and contractors on marine safety and shipping related initiatives and projects including but not limited to:
    • Shipping and Marine Safety Training initiatives
    • Geographic Response Planning
  • Assist or lead in coordination, planning, and organizing meetings and workshops.
  • Provide meeting support for committee meetings including meeting coordination, note taking and meeting summary reports.
  • Work with communication staff to engage with communities.
  • Work with members of the Marine Planning Program to develop documents and other products.
  • Assist in developing technical and non-technical reports, presentations, and other materials for meetings and workshops as required.
  • Other administrative duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or post-secondary enrollment in marine or environmental planning, natural resource management, business administration, office administration or a related discipline with a minimum of two years of related experience.
  • Proficient with computers including word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software, Outlook, MSWord, Excel, OneDrive, virtual meeting platforms, etc..
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Strong planning and coordination skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Detail oriented and highly organized.
  • Experience working with First Nations, stakeholders and in multidisciplinary technical groups.
  • Knowledge of Haida Gwaii will be an asset.
