Overview

The Program Support Worker (PSW) functions as part of a team to provide a range of supports for those on Haida Gwaii who are low-income or at risk for homelessness for a variety of reasons including lack of affordable housing, poverty, mental illness or substance misuse.

  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Organized, efficient, flexible approach to the job
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Basic computer skills: Word, Excel, Internet
  • High level of patience and emotional resilience
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality & a non-judgemental attitude

 

Hours of work: 12 Hour Shifts, 24/7 Full-time/Part-time/Casual

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist Residents to address and enhance life skills that enable healthy, independent living; learn budgeting, cooking skills, self care and positive use of free time
  • Assess the needs of Residents and work with them to develop and implement individual support plans, including documentation of Residents progress and achievements
  • Create and support community development initiatives with the Residents
  • Demonstrate professionalism by adhering to Kal Naay, Alder House standards, protocols and policy
  • Maintain current knowledge of community services and work cooperatively with partnering agencies including culturally specific programs
  • Perform building cleaning and maintenance duties

 

Qualifications:

  • Secondary School Graduation Diploma or a combination of skills and experience
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to complete required training

 

 

 

All staff, whether part-time or full-time paid or voluntary, are required to have the appropriate skills, training, and qualifications for the tasks they perform. 

These include:

  • Criminal Record Check
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System training (WHMIS)
  • Foodsafe Level 1
  • Mental Health Awareness & De-escalation
  • Working Alone Safely in BC
  • Standard First Aid
