Hours: 40 hours per week (Permanent full time – Tuesday to Saturday)
Rate of Pay: $31.14

Reporting to Operations Management, the successful candidate will provide Labouring, Custodial,
Scale House Attendant duties and if qualified, operate equipment in the Operator I classification at
the Ridley Island Landfill Site. The primary duty of the incumbent will be labouring and scale house
relief. This position will be required to work Tuesday to Saturday. The successful candidate will
perform all duties required to ensure compliance of regulations as governed by the City of Prince
Rupert’s Landfill Operational Certificate and our Occupational Health and Safety policies. As a
condition of maintaining this position the successful candidate must pass and hold the SWANA BC
Landfill Operations Basic Course or current Industry standard within two (2) years. The employee
must be aware of job site hazards in order to minimize the risk of injury and property/equipment
damage. The successful candidate will be highly motivated to ensure the timely and efficient
completion of assigned tasks while dealing with multiple priorities, the Public and City Staff. The
position is attendance sensitive and will be required to work overtime as operationally necessary. The
successful candidate must supply own transportation to and from work site and be familiar with
working in an Industrial setting. Upon obtaining the Class III with Air Brakes, or if you already hold
this certification, the incumbent will be classified as the Landfill Operator I ($34.09).

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: 
Grade 12 or GED; 
Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence (Driver’s Abstract required) immediately and Class 3 with Air

Brakes may be required; 
SWANA BC Landfill Operations Basic Certification or current Industry standard (must be obtained

within 2 years.) 
Must be able to obtain and hold a RCMP Criminal Record & Vulnerable Sector Check. Results of

which will be reviewed by the City for employment; 
Proficient computer experience and processing is essential (Microsoft Word, Excel and Access)

Accurate typing speed of 40 wpm; 
Must have recent and relevant experience in civil maintenance, construction or labouring

practices; 
General clerical, cash reconciliation and cashier experience; and, 
Traffic Control Certification will be required. 
Emergency First Aid (Level 1); and, 
WHMIS Certification.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY: 
Must become knowledgeable (within 3 months) of leachate control monitoring, Waste

Management as it relates to the operation of a landfill, the recycling program in Prince Rupert,
and of screening and identifying controlled materials and substances; 

Operate equipment in an organized, efficient, safe and proper manner according to all relevant
legislation, policies and procedures; 

Cash handling and reconciliation skills mandatory; 
Ability to identify and screen loads. Along with assisting the public with unloading and further

screening of loads; 
Must be able to follow all written work and safety procedures; 
A working knowledge of custodial skills related to ensuring a clean, health and safe environment; 
Required to accurately complete operators log book; 
Considerable knowledge in the use of equipment, materials and methods used in maintenance,

construction and repair activities of municipal works; 
Considerable skill, experience and understanding in the proper and safe operation of tools and

equipment, such as but not limited to, mowers, tractors, pumps, hand tools, rakes, grinders,
shovels, pick, broom, weed eaters, litter grasper, and gas, diesel, electric or air powered tools
required to complete the assigned tasks; 

Able to work with minimal supervision and have a high level of self-motivation; 
Requires critical judgement and confidence in decision making; 
Ability to deal tactfully, courteously and accurately with the public and co-workers; 
Good interpersonal skills; 
Required to perform traffic and security control; 
Must work independently and is expected to maintain a schedule of work. Any problems may

result in increased stress to complete tasks in a limited time; and, 
Perform other duties as required.

FITNESS REQUIREMENT: 
Must be able to perform heavy manual labour in all weather conditions; 
This position is physically strenuous and demanding which requires the employee to be in good

physical condition; and, 
Heavy lifting, pulling and managing equipment/objects are part of the assigned tasks. Employees

must be able to handle weight up to 100 lbs and able to lift 40 lb.
