HOME SUPPORT WORKER (Part Time)

Description

Reporting to the Health Services Administrator in Hartley Bay, the Home Support Worker will work at the Hartley Bay Nursing Station for office duties and work in the client and patient homes.
Duties:
• Provides personal care (or respite care) to clients, as agreed, on a regular basis such as meal preparation, cooking for storage, cleaning, mobility, traditional resource preparation (smoke house activities, canning, jarring, packaging, freezing);
• May have to assist with direct feeding which includes oral feeding and alternatives;
• Aids with personal hygiene including haircare, mouth care, skin care, shaving, toileting assistance;
• Assists clients with housekeeping, laundry, proper lighting, home repairs, furniture adjustments;
• Provide walking assistance, and preventative exercise programs.
• When trained, help with exercises, physiotherapy and other medical plans;
• Assist with transferring from bed to wheelchair, in/out of shower or other transfer assistance when required;
• Assist Elders Coordinator with organizing occasional outings for clients individual or as a group such as Elders Center activities, when required or when Elder’s coordinator is away;
• Follow direction and care plans as directed by nurses and other health professionals in patients care and within the scope of the Home Support Workers duties;
• Perform other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• 1-year experience in Community Health as Personal Support Worker, Health Care Aide or a combination in education and experience in above areas;
• Good communication skills including good computer skills in writing reports;
• Highly effective organizational skills and stress management skills;
• Ability to work independently with little supervision and as a team player;
• Must have high degree of confidentiality in performing the duties;
• Be honest, respectful and trustworthy;
• Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity;
• Demonstrate sound work ethics;
• Willing to take community-based training:
Working Conditions:
• Spend some hours sitting and using office equipment and computers, as well as work in client homes lifting patients and assisting with their mobility, which can cause muscle strain;
• Possibly work in infectious conditions – must ensure clean and safe practices to avoid infection or cross contamination between clients, family members and themselves;
• May be stressful environment due to dealing with illnesses and stressful situations;
• Preference given to applicants residing in Hartley Bay.
Licenses & Certificates:
• Must have current immunizations;
• First Aid, CPR and Food Safe an asset or willing to obtain Certificates;
• Successful Criminal Record Check and Background Check.
