Reporting to the Band Manager, The Head Start and Child Care Center Workers will help manage the Head Start program to ensure the program is delivered efficiently and economically; the children, the parents/guardians, and staff are treated fairly; the Head Start and Child Care decisions will be in the best interest of the children, and will not be influenced by private or personal considerations.


The Head Start and Child Care Program is designed, operated and evaluated according to the Head Start principles and guidelines. The best interests of the Gitga’at children, families and community are most important. This program is often the first time a child is in a class setting away from their parents and it prepares them for kindergarten, through a play-based program, which includes free play, story time, snack time, arts & crafts, gross motor play, circle time and learning Gitga’at Culture and Language. The program is designed for 0-6yr old’s in a preschool setting.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Create an environment in which children, families, employees and volunteers participate in relevant and significant activities daily;
• Implement the six program components of head start: culture and Language, education, health promotion, nutrition, social support, parent and family involvement;
• Apply Gitga’at cultural values and beliefs to all aspects of daily programming;
• Involve the Parent Committees;
• Model healthy lifestyles;
• Support the role of the extended family, particularly the Elders, culture teachers and traditional people, in the teaching of and caring for children;
• Ensure safe supervision of all children during class time and transitions;
• Develop mechanisms ensuring that the project is accountable, i.e. developing and implementing a policy and procedures and manual with Head Start Regional Staff and Parent Body;
• Maintaining and balancing Headstart budgets;
• Report on project activities to the community by holding regular Head Start meetings;
• Follow applicable child care or preschool legislation and respective regulations;
• Follow safety standards, comparable to existing federal and provincial standards and regulations for child care facilities, including those applying to public buildings, construction and maintenance, fire inspection and regularly scheduled fire frills, handicap accessibility, equipment and materials;

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• ECE Certificate preferred, 1 yr. minimum experience working with children or a combination of education and training working with children;
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
• Adhere to Gitga’at Code of Ethics and Oath of Confidentiality;
• Knowledge and understanding of the Gitga’at First Nation heritage, and culture of the community;
• Have a passion to help and work with children;
• Be a positive role model for children, parents and families;
• Have commitment, flexibility and good problem-solving skills;
• Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills;
• An ability to work quickly and efficiently under changing circumstances.

Work Conditions:

• Work in a loud environment;
• Have the ability to lift at least 50 lbs.;
• Prepare nutritious meals/snacks daily.
• Must reside in Hartley Bay.

Licensing and Certificates:

• Food Safe;
• Must be CPR/First Aid certified;
• CRC;
• Compliance with the immunization program of the ministry of health;
