PURPOSE
Kitkatla Development Corporation (“KDC”) is currently recruiting for an experienced Forestry Manager to manage the development and management of its Forestry division. KDC is a growing corporation with a significant opportunity in the BC Northwest to continue the efforts in developing a thriving forestry business. Joining KDC in this role will play a pivotal part in facilitating the commercial success of its forestry business and the Gitxaala Nation.
Reporting directly to the CEO of KDC; the Forestry Manager is accountable for overseeing development of its operations and promotion of its Forestry Business, ensuring efficient and effective management of office and related field staff as well as ongoing management of its forestry contractors. Forestry is a renewable resource and with proper stewardship of our lands should provide equal opportunities for generations to come. The incumbent is to conduct all activities in a manner that supports the mission and the vision and values of the KDC and the Gitxaala Nation. This is a full-time position located in Prince Rupert, BC. It is anticipated that the position will initially be filled on a short-term contract basis, with possibility of transition to full-time permanent employment.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Forestry planning activities including the development and management of a Forestry Management Plan and related reporting;
• Coordinate and manage other forestry professionals including contractors and related contract management activities;
• Manage all applications and/or submissions required for new harvesting and/or post harvesting requirements;
• Keep updated on applicable legislations and management practices for public forest lands, Federal reserves, private lands and other resource management legislations;
• Assist in representing Gitxaala Nation in substantive discussions with forestry industry representatives and other groups; as well, as promoting and marketing KDC and its Forestry division capabilities;
• Work with Gitxaala CLC Employment & Training staff, industry and other groups to promote, develop and deliver job related training and programs that enhance the employment, career and training opportunities for Gitxaala members;
• Other duties, consistent with the duties and responsibilities of the position as directed by the KDC CEO;
• Comfortable working for extended durations throughout all seasons and during inclement/adverse weather conditions;
• Must hold a valid driver’s license
EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Demonstration understanding of current forestry legislation (Federal Indian Reserve, Forest Range Practices Act, resource management policies, referrals and an understanding of silviculture activities;
Completed or nearing completion of qualifications as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF);
Currently a member or willing to work towards becoming a member of the Association of BC Forest Professionals;
Minimum of 5 years of coastal forestry experience in road layout/design, falling boundary layout, knowledge of applicable legislation and approval processes;
Knowledge and understanding of Gitxaala Nation social, cultural, and economic issues and aspirations;
A motivated, self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work independently as well as within a team environment;
Strong organizational and time management skills;
Class 5, BC Drivers’ License; position may require frequent travel throughout the Province and to remote locations; may be required to provide own vehicle for work purposes.
