Casual Employment – Public Works (Full Time)

The City of Prince Rupert is inviting resumes from qualified individuals for casual employment in our
Public Works Department. Casuals are employed to provide relief for regular employees and for short
term extra work. This may lead to full time employment in the future.

This semi‐skilled work will involve a variety of diverse activities within various sectors of Public Works
including utilities, sanitation, cemetery, roads and parks. Under general supervision, duties include,
but are not limited to, cutting grass, landscaping, gardening, street maintenance, operation of
equipment, small machinery, refuse collection, municipal grounds keeping, janitorial, asphalt repairs,
concrete finishing, traffic control, litter pick up, providing assistance to pipefitters or trades persons,
slashing and other duties as assigned.

Staff interact with the public and as such applicants must have the ability to deal with residents in a
courteous, respectful and professional manner at all times. Applicants must be aware of the physical
demands of the assigned tasks and comply with safe work practices. Workers are required to perform
strenuous physical work for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.

APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
Required:
– Grade 12 or GED.
– Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence (Driver’s Abstract required).
– Must have a minimum of 4,000 hours of recent and relevant experience in civil maintenance,
construction or labouring practices.
– Must be able to obtain a RCMP Criminal Record & Vulnerable Sector Check. Results of which will
be reviewed by the City for employment.
–  Physically able to perform the assigned duties including weight handling of up to 100 lbs and four
(4) to eight (8) hours per day of picking up refused up to 40 lb bags.
– Demonstrated skills and experience in the safe, efficient and responsible operation of small maintenance equipment, hand and power tools.
– Ability to work with minimal supervision or in a team environment.
–  Able to follow safe work practices.
–  Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with the public and coworkers.

Preferred:
– Class 3 with Air Brake endorsement.
–  Emergency First Aid (Level 1).
–  WHMIS.
– Traffic Control Certification.
– Confined Space Certification.
– An ITA Heavy Equipment Operator Certification from a recognized Heavy Equipment Training Institution. Include your operator log book with a summary of operating hours.
– Previous experience within the past five years in civil construction and/or public works related maintenance tasks.
– Experience in the operation of machinery and power tools and experience working with concrete, asphalt, water and sewer construction would be an asset.
– Considerable knowledge of Public Works maintenance and construction practices, which includes the use of equipment, materials and methods used in maintenance, construction and repair activities of municipal works including, but not limited to, Utilities, Roads, Sanitation and Parks systems.

– Considerable skill, experience and understanding in the proper and safe operation of tools and equipment, such as but not limited to, mowers, tractors, pumps, hand tools, rakes, grinders, shovels, pick, broom, weed eaters, litter grasper, and gas, diesel, electric or air powered tools required to complete the assigned tasks.
