Position Description: Part-time Biologist

Part-time Position: 15 hours per week/60 hours per month

Commencing: January 4, 2021.

Ending: April 30, 2021 (unless parties agree to extend)

Laskeek Bay Conservation Society is looking for a part-time biologist to support on-going biological field programs, program development and data collation and analysis. This is a unique opportunity to work with a successful non-profit that has conducted foundational marine and terrestrial research and conservation for nearly 30 years on Haida Gwaii with the support of citizen scientists. The biologist is responsible for maintaining biological field programs, supporting program development, building connections across Haida Gwaii, and analyzing organizational data sets. The biologist is accountable to the organization’s Executive Director, Board of Directors and Scientific Advisors.

1. To assist Laskeek Bay Conservation Society maintain on-going biological field programs (estimate 50-60 % of time) including:
• To assist in planning field programs for 2021
• To ensure field programs follow Strategic Plan 2019-2021
• To re-establish contact with local organizations – Gwaii Haanas, BC Parks, Council of the Haida Nations – as required
• To respond to emails in-coming to
• To ensure data from the 2020 field season is appropriately filed and submitted to appropriate agencies
2. To work closely with the LBCS Administrator on funding proposals and other day-to-day administrative requirements (estimate 20% of time).
3. To collate and analyze data and assist LBCS Scientific Advisor to prepare reports on existing LBCS long-term data sets and assist in planning future research (20-30 % of time and dependent on skills of successful candidate).
Wage: $30/hour as an employee of LBCS.

• University graduate with academic background in Biology or Environmental Sciences
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Passion for marine and terrestrial research and conservation through citizen science
• Independent and resourceful worker with strong initiative and a collaborative attitude
• Resident of Haida Gwaii
• Willing to work at least part-time in LBCS office in Skidegate.
Interest in potential field work with LBCS in summer of 2021 would be an asset but not a requirement for this position.
