JOB DESCRIPTION:

North Pacific Cannery National Historic Site is seeking a part time General Manager Assistant who is a friendly, hard-working mature individual with superior customer service and organizational skills. He/she will assist the General Manager to oversee our overall visitor experiences. The main objective of the General Manager Assistant is to supervise employees and the site when the General Manager is off site and to provide a meaningful and consistent visitor experience. This would involve following up and welcoming all tours, cruise ships and school tours to our National Historic Site. It would also include the ability to step in and conduct guided tours. Provide back up in the visitor centre and gift shop as needed. The assistant Manager will also be called upon to assist with employee scheduling in conjunction with the volume of private tours. The assistant manager will also book tours, liaise with tour operators and represent the North Pacific Cannery’s historical aspects of the site.

The incumbent will work closely with the General Manager to supervise and train staff, conduct evaluative exit surveys to ensure all visitors have a rewarding heritage experience and also assist with collecting information relating to visitor statistics and approach visitors who might participate in our new oral history project and our visitor exit survey.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate would have a keen interest in Canadian History, Museum, Business Administration, Retail Management, tourism  or relevant field with a keen interest in and/or knowledge of administration and customer service. He/she must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and experience in organizing, coordinating and collaborating with a wide range of different groups. He/she must have experience working with the general public, preferably in an administrative environment, and possess excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal and administrative skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively. The ideal candidate will have superior problem solving skills and be excellent at commanding an audience and motivating others, and be comfortable engaging with the local community and visiting public. Tourism experience and asset as well as retail design and merchandising. Bilingual candidates preferred.  (English-French or English-German)

ORIENTATION & TRAINING

Orientation will include an extensive tour of the heritage site, where the candidate will be briefed on the North Pacific Cannery’s history, past programs, events, strategic goals and interpretation goals. As part of the orientation process, employees will also be required to read and understand the Employee Handbook which specifically outlines the policy and procedures of the organization. This includes a comprehensive health and safety, as well as an emergency plan. During this orientation the candidate will also be introduced to staff and management, and key board members they will work with throughout their employment. The General Manager Assistant will then be trained on current protocols for taking bookings, scheduling tours, scheduling staff, maintaining visitor statistics and a variety of administrative duties. He/she will learn procedures for liaising with other site service staff and be trained to coordinate and implement visitor exit surveys effectively.

SUPERVISION

The General Manager Assistant will report directly to the General Manager. The General Manager will provide a complete orientation, hands-on training and then job shadowing to ensure the General Manager Assistant can confidently and successfully complete their duties. He/she will have guidance and supervision from the General Manager and a select group of Board Members.

North Pacific Cannery is located in pristine wilderness surroundings on the Skeena River in the town of Port Edward, located 20km south of Prince Rupert with a population of approximately 500 people. Prince Rupert is a port city with a population of 12,000 and serves as the land, air, and water transportation hub of BC’s north coast. The region is characterized by temperate rainforest, resource-based industry, and cultural diversity.

North Pacific Cannery, National Historic Site preserves, exhibits and interprets the history of the West Coast Fishing Industry, celebrating its role in the economic and cultural development of the province. The site is integral to a local, regional, and national identity, is significant as one of the few intact salmon canneries that remain on the west coast of North America, and continues to be relevant as a tourist destination and community hub today.

NPC aims to be: a collective memory for the industrial fishery on the Skeena River and British Columbia; a cultural hub for the community, attracting the local population for arts and sports events; and a key driver of economic transformation in the development of a sustainable tourism industry for the region.
