ActivAge Fitness Leader (Part Time)




BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) is looking for a motivated fitness leader who demonstrates a commitment to learning and professional growth, and who is eager to participate in a provincial initiative called ActivAge™.

BCRPA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to building and sustaining active healthy lifestyles and communities in BC. Since 1958, BCRPA has provided leadership, training and support, fostering the principles of accessibility and inclusiveness, to help its members meet provincial and local health and physical activity priorities.

ActivAge™ Overview

ActivAge™ is a 3-month group led physical activity program for inactive older adults (65+). The program introduces participants to physical activity and reinforces their commitment to incorporate it into their daily lives. This fun and social program helps get participants moving in a relaxed environment with likeminded people. Each class session incorporates physical activities that engage participants, and features in-class discussion and resources to improve overall health and physical well-being.

The program has two class options:

Option 1 – focuses on improving activities associated with daily living,

Option 2 – focuses on exercises that will enable each participant to become more involved with other physical activity programs.

Each option runs once a week for one hour over a 12-week period. ActivAge is led by BCRPA registered Fitness Leaders with the Older Adult specialty, and have completed their ActivAge online training (8 CECs). For more information about ActivAge please visit BCRPA’s website:

Major Responsibilities:

  • Review and ensure all participants have completed the PAR Q+ prior to the start of the first weekly program
  • Implement the weekly program according to the ActivAge training module and curriculum, and modify the exercises based on participants needs
  • Liaise with the recreation coordinator at the designated recreation facility
  • Report directly to the Older Adult Provincial Program Coordinator at BCRPA



  • BCRPA Registered Fitness Leader with Older Adult Specialty 1
  • ActivAge specialty (see above)
  • Current First Aid and CPR
  • Criminal Record Check

Required skills and knowledge:

  •  Experience working with older adults
  • Knowledge of the tenets of physical activity principles particularly as the relate to older adults
  • Strong communication and public relations skills
  • Strong organizational, time management and leadership skills
  • Problem solving and conflict management skills

Desired experience:

  • Knowledge of various physical activity options for older adults in your community
