Resources and Services Available for Newcomers

Newcomers are invited to visit the Resource Library at Hecate Strait Employment Development Society. We are open daily from 11am till 4pm Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and we are also open from Noon till 8pm on Wednesdays.

We have collected materials to help prepare for a number of goals:

Employment: Get help putting together or updating a resume or cover letter; search for jobs on the job board and online; set up 1 on 1 tutoring sessions to practice workplace communications skills, such as writing emails, making phone calls, taking notes, and working with workplace documents.

Citizenship: You might also need to prepare for the citizenship test, review the Discover citizenship prep manual, or find out about other online resources such as videos or online quizzes.

Language Exam Prep: The Resource Library staff can help you find resources and learn about which English language exams such as IELTS or CeLPiP will be needed for demonstrating your English language level.

Workplace Certifications: The resource library staff can also assist you with preparing for workplace certifications such as Learn2Drive, FoodSafe, WHMIS, SuperHost, or Serving It Right, and others, which are required by employers to get work.

Online Learning: A growing number of programs and courses are delivered online, such as LINC Home Study, so the Resource Library has some materials available to assist you gain more confidence using computers and practice navigating and completing online learning assignments and tasks.

Our services for newcomers and immigrants are available free of charge in Prince Rupert thanks to funding from Immigration, Refugees and Citzenship Canada and BC Settlement and Integration Services.
